It's not just Walmart. With gas prices up everything else will be going up too. I feel your pain.
With corn prices up (to make alternative fuel) grain costs are higher for farmers so milk prices in turn must go up. Quite the chain of events. Heard on news last night that milk prices in NY will be going up 60 cents. http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/78243

Beware of falling prices also = beware of rising prices. They can't be always putting everything down, or eventually it would all be free! I noticed that when my kids were in diapers. For a few weeks wal-mart would be the cheapest in town by a long shot, and then out of the blue, the price would be back up to where everyone else was (or more).

I agree that its happening everywhere. I went to Sam's for some of our once-a-month shopping & since last month, just about everything we bought was .20- nearly $1 higher. The aloe vera juice went from $4.96 to $5.88. This is so irritating.

Farmes aren't getting any raise for selling their milk though.
Its not helping the farmers get any grain or corn seed to plant.
My BIL will not be able to plant corn this year.

Walmart is the WORST at raising prices out of the blue.

I buy my bacon there (Oscar Meyer Center Cut, it's fairly lean), and it used to be cheaper than everywhere else by $2 or so ($3 at WM). Well, went a few days ago to pick some up and it's up to 3.98. Just like that!
Their formula is more expensive than anywhere else in town, not even counting sales! It's ridiculous!

Milk at my WM is 3.38. It may have gone up since last week, though.

I'm wondering now if it'd be advisable to stock up really well on non-perishables now, to last through the summer until gas prices conveniently come back down in September, like they always do. (Any thoughts on this?)

lukesmama: I've been wondering about stocking up too. I just did a pantry inventory and am going to check it against my yearly usage totals. I think I'm already okay in the frozen fruit department.

But milk products is another matter. Course it's all expensive here. Liquid milk is $3.78/gall. and powdered milk is $24 for enough to make 24 litres.

I don't even want to shop anymore! I hate the way that everything has started to rise in price. Wonder if we can all boycott??

WalMart doesn't change things completely out of the blue.. OK some things they do, but on others, if the local Winco, or Winn Dixie just raised their prices on Kellogs cereal, then WalMart will raise prices to match them, and the same is in reverse... Some things are out of the blue though, and I have had to change the price on one thing several times in a two week period. That came from headquarters.... ( I worked there for about three years)....

Maybe, but sometimes I really think it's just greed. Case in point:

Last year, cokes were going on sale 2.50 like every week at all the local stores. So, WM dropped prices from 4.28 to 2.50. Great, right? Everyone could stop bringing in their sale ads and price matching...

Just when I got comfortable with them being consistently cheap there, and stopped scouting out sales on cokes because they were always cheaper at WM (barely a month or two later)....BAM! the price was SUDDENLY back to 4.28. It wasn't even gradual.

IMO, it had "dirty trick" written all over it....if it was a temporary price reduction, they ought to bill it as such. But I guess I have the right to not shop there, and I am spending less there now than ever, and working on cutting it back to $0 spent there....my closed wallet will speak louder than words.
