Default can milk be diluted with water?

i'm trying to drastically cut my grocery spending and milk is a large part of my food budget. the prices have gone up so much, and even powdered milk is not all that much less expensive, maybe 50 cents a gallon less. i was wondering since skim milk, 1% and whole milk are all the same price here, if i could buy whole milk and dilute it with water, half water, half whole milk. this would end up costing less per gallon than the powdered milk. has anyone ever tried this and if so, does it hold up well?

I do it on the rare occasions I buy milk. Here milk is about $3.50 a gallon, and powdered milk is about $1.62 per gallon (I buy 22 qt. boxes at a wholesale club for about $8), so we mainly drink powdered as we go thru about 5 gallons of milk a week. When I do buy a gallon of regular milk on sale, I get 2% or whole milk and when I get home I dump half in an empty milk jug, then fill both with water.

You just get watered down milk. It's not bad either. I don't worry about less nutrients because we all take a multi-vitamin every day anyway.

I think it taste fine. I buy 2 % for the family, and milk upsets my stomach so if i do have some I dilute it down.

I do it all the time and nobody has noticed. We are use to 2% so I just buy whole and water it in half. Its just as good for you , think of it as drinking half a glass of whole.

When DH buys real milk he dilutes it and the kids don't mind it at all.

I also dilute whole milk with water to make 2%. We can't tell the difference and it really lowers our milk costs. I've been thinking about going organic, this would make organic more affordable for me.

I have done this a few times. I usually do my grocery shopping on Fridays. On Thursday morning the milk may be a little low so I just add some water. No one has complained so far. We don't drink much milk, though. Just use it in cooking and coffee.

I so badly want to go organic, but it's about $6/gallon around here.

I usually buy 1%, but I don't think I could drink any milk knowing that I added water to it. For some reason, I just don't like the idea.

If you have kids I wouldn't do it. Children & teens need LOTS of calcium and if you water down the milk you're only providing half the nutrients.

We drink LOTS of milk around here and I just can't dilute it. I will just have to budget somewhere else......but not on my moo juice!!

If you are concerned about calcium, Vitamins A & D? My kids take a multi, and they get plenty of calcium thru cheese, yogurt, pudding, spinach, broccoli, beans, salmon, oranges, etc. I also buy calcium-fortified orange juice.
