Yes, and it messes up recipes. I made a casserole over the weekend that is a decades-long family favorite, but it uses some canned items for which the can size has changed (and I SWEAR I think they contain more water now too) and it really wasn't very good at all. Boo Hiss!

I have noticed it too. I even contacted the Little Debbie cake company telling them how disappointed I was that their cupcakes are so much smaller. All of their cakes are smaller as far as I can tell. They responded telling me they made all the cupcakes the same size. They just totally dismissed the entire idea of my e-mail to them. It really made me mad.

I'll have to agree with Edna. I have noticed recently that there is alot more liquid in the cans than fruit and vegetables. Even though the can says the same oz's the content is less as far as the solids in it. that's bunk.........
Even in the cans of tuna there is more water than before. The fish is literally swimming in it.

I noticed it here too. One reason I grow my own tomatoes to freeze, instead of buying liquid with the odd tomato in a can. Not sure what to do about canned fish though. I'm buying frozen or fresh salmon to get around it there. But tuna...I'm not sure what to do...we don't get that fresh or frozen here.

The price of tuna isnt so good either. I refuse to pay more than 50cents a can but thats proving to be impossible. And I have noticed the size on some things.

yup you all are right. everything is so much smaller or more watery.even tp. they say 1000 sheets but even the sheets are smaller.yes i checked.were getting the shaft at every end!so if you buy a juice or something and usually add a bit of water to make it stretch. dont bother anymore because thay already did that for you and charged you for the water, too.

Funny you should post this. I noticed this when I opened the canned carrots for dinner (kids Boo'd the spinach idea). The only canned carrots we like are "LeSeuer" brand. I poured out the cans and HOLY CRAP! The same bowl I always use and it was overflowing with "carrot juice" and very little carrots. I had to open a third can just to feed everyone

Same here Yankeemom. I opened a can of peas last night and the amount of peas could have rested in one hand. Ane these are name brand not generic. Well we got a good size garden in this year and waiting for the beet sprouts to surface so we can get them in the ground in the garden. If I want water I will turn on the faucet. We are growing potatoes, beets, beans, squash, cantalope, garlic, tomatoes, leeks, horseradish, broccoli, cauliflower and herbs. So the vegetable canners can eat dirt cause they are not gonna get in more money than necessary from us. Fed up with this.

I have also noticed that the larger bulk sizes are actually becoming more expensive per oz/lb than the smaller sizes. I used to go with a friend to Costco every once in a while to pick up particular things that were cheaper but have found it is now actually less expensive in some cases to by 2 or 3 of the smaller size rather than the supposedly "bulk" size. I have noticed this to at Winco, the local el-cheapo grocery store in my area. I suspect the various companies have figured out that some people just assume the bigger size is cheaper and buy it without actually calculating/checking the per unit cost.

    fuzzybunny:

That's been a trick Superstore has been using in Canada for some time. I always check price per pound on produce now, to be sure the bagged stuff is cheaper.

Also, you have to check canned against frozen and fresh. For certain foods, at certain times of year, fresh is cheaper than canned or frozen. Other times frozen is cheaper than canned or fresh. You have to keep your eyes open and your mind working. It helps to take along a calculator! Though store managers don't like to see those.

    Me too, LOL.

I have noticed the chip bag is a little bit airier than usual these days. Guess if I want chips I will have to make my own. I haven't noticed this about canned stuff though. I don't buy a lot of it though.

I was thinking the same thing about the chip bags. I hardly every buy any, and I splurged on my favorite smaller size 99 cent honey barbeque chips this week and there was even less than a few months ago when I bought them. I bought chicken in a family pack last week and was knocked over by the price. I bought the same amount 2 months ago and the price was at least $4 cheaper for the same amount. I am trying to be even more careful when grocery shopping now.

I got 'spyed' upon when I whipped out my notebook that I had written brand name and generic name items in there and compared them with the Costco/Sams club pack size (a mini price book if you will). I even had a calculator. Every item I put in the cart...I stopped, flipped through my notebook and then calculated and scribbled notes like mad and let out a heavy sigh. Next I put the item back on the shelf and moved on.

One curious food sample lady dared asked what I was doing - as she got to watch me work up the aisle I explained to her that I didnt need to pay the $50 annual fee to become a member to pay more then I would for the exact same products sold at their regular store (Walmart). She was so mortified, especially when I showed her how much those new Hellmans Salad Spritzers were selling. The cost for the 3 pk @ Sams would've gotten me about 6 if I bought them separately at Walmart, though they were on sale in the flyer or something like that.
