A nice break for a change
Lately it feels like we're being nickel and dimed to death, especially with the move and dh's schooling. After a few calls we determined it really was in our best interest to take the smaller house. We needed to have something solid in place so we could move forward with a plan. Seeing as how the house is smaller, the highest utility bill the family (five people) had was still $100 less than our highest bills and the average bill was significantly less as well. Dh will still be able to bike to school and we can chug along with one car. I know we'll manage something there for the time being. Dd gets to stay in the same school so no big emotional upheaval for her which is really a relief for me as she's quite sensitive and emotional. We'll have plenty of room in the yard to grow a garden and set up a clothes line if we'd like so some potential savings there. We'll have to get rid of and sell some stuff so a little bit of income there. Anyway, after weighing the pros and cons, this was our decision. I've been so stressed out and literally sick over moving that this has been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
Well, the owner called today to set up a time to get together this weekend so we can see the finished product (they repainted the whole house and replaced all of the carpeting). We had a nice talk about the utilities, lease, etc....and he said we can have the first two weeks (last two weeks of June) for free so we can move in at our leisure and save some money. Half a month's rent is really a big deal to be saving right now. With all that we've been going through lately, this was really a nice break for us. It really helped me to feel that we've made the right decision and this guy is a good guy. This is the equivalent to use getting $40 a month off the rent if we stretched it out over the year. Not a bad discount

I know you are relieved to finally know where you will be living. I think you were trying to make a choice between the house and the duplex. Sounds like you made the best choice for you and your family AND the owner sounds wonderful! I hope your move goes smoothly.

I'm glad you got your housing situation all figured out.
It's going to be nice to move to a freshly painted house with new carpet and if you declutter big time, you won't find it that small after all. There is still time to get some tomato plants etc. in the garden for this summer. So.. Congrats on the new house!

Thanks everyone. Dh is still not thrilled, but it's a space/price issue for him. He just can't wrap his head around paying the same amount for less space. I told him there's a big difference between the condo (townhouse style) and a stand alone house. He's been saying for years we needed to downsize our stuff and now that we finally can, he's upset. I don't know what to do with him, lol. I told him this was it. I'm done looking. I'm done stressing. We'll make this work and in the long run, we'll be saving. Sure I wish the duplex had worked out because it was a nice space, but I was okay when it didn't. We'll just have to learn how to be organized people.

Good luck Kimberly. It sounds like you made the right decision for you. Hopefully DH will see the wisdom of it once you get settled in...with less stuff.
