Your going to find that Homeowners Insurance Companies vary greatly by area. Like right now in Floirda alot of companies are no longer writing homeowners insurnace. They are coming up with more and more creative reasons not to write policies or cancel existing ones. Since our agent represents a wide variety of companies as each has canceled or moved out of state she has replaced them. So far we haven't had to go to the state pool but it may happen in the years to come. Many in my area are having a hard time simply because of the age of their homes. Homes over 20 years are being dropped at an alarming rate.
As for us we HAD Clarendon Select for 15 years then they moved out of the state of Florida. We were lucky to be picked up by their underwriter Tower Hill. But I have s suspision that they are going to cancel us this year. They came out and measured our home and did what they call a home inspection/survey. Now I've had calls about what type of dogs I've got, their bite history. My husbands plant collection and our painting business. We come up for renewal in Sept. so the timing is right for either a huge hike or cancelation letter.
Our policy was $697.00 in 2000 and $2,100.00 in 2006. Afraid to see what comes next. No I don't live anywhere near the beach!

Depends where you live. I'm Canadian, so our companies will be different. I'm assuming you're in the US. Best thing to do is shop around for comparisons. Right now we're looking at re-visiting our home insurance. The current company wants to up our rates by over $100/year due to the increased cost of construction in the area.

I love the company we have our homeowners insurance through. I cannot complain at all - but then again DH has been employed by them as a CPA in charge of their investments and budgets for the past 7 years.

We have USAA. Neither DH nor I are in the military. It's the insurance he had through his stepdad, and we've been able to keep it beyond just car insurance.

We've had good experiences with them on our car insurance. No comment yet on homeowners insurance. After 8 years, we've recently filed our first claim (2 leaks in our sewer lines under the house). The claim is still pending.
