Default HUD Good Neighbor Next Door Program

Dh and I were orginally going to go this route when we bought our next home, until we found a custom home builder that we fell in love with. It is a great program.

Law enforcement officers, pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers and firefighters/emergency medical technicians can contribute to community revitalization while becoming homeowners through HUD's Good Neighbor Next Door Sales Program. HUD offers a substantial incentive in the form of a discount of 50% from the list price of the home. In return you must commit to live in the property for 36 months as your sole residence.

We are in the process of hopefully purchasing a home. And although I don't think it is in the HUD program, there is a program here in TX called SETH (I forget what it stands for). The specific subdivision we are looking into offers $19000 in assistance. The builder was hired by the city to destroy some rotten apartments and build and plan this subdivision. Also since my hubby is a teacher, we are checking into another program that helps teachers (not sure if it is the same Good Neighbor program or not). Hopefully that will knock a bit more off the final price.

DH is a police officer and we looked into that program. They really had some nice houses and 50% is a great deal, but all the houses were in an area of town that we really didn't want to live in. They are typically higher crime areas.
