    Default My trip to Walgreens

I went to Walgreens last night and they only had one box of Nutri-Grain bars left. The clerk offered me a raincheck, but I explained that wouldn't work cause I needed 10 Kelloggs items on one receipt and I wanted to take advantage of all the Kelloggs deals Walgreens deals is offering this week.

So I drove to another location...

    Kellogg's Smart Start cereal (12-20 oz): $2.50
    - $1.00/1 coupon from coupons.com

    Kellogg's Smart Start cereal (12-20 oz): $2.50

    Kellogg's Special K cereal (12-20 oz): $2.50
    Kellogg's Special K cereal (12-20 oz): $2.50
    - $1.00/2 coupon from Kellogg insert in 8/5/07 paper

    Kellogg's Nutri-Grain cereal bars (8 ct): $2.50
    Kellogg's Nutri-Grain cereal bars (8 ct): $2.50
    - $1.00/2 coupon from Kellogg insert in 8/5/07 paper

    Kellogg's Nutri-Grain cereal bars (8 ct): $2.50
    Kellogg's Nutri-Grain cereal bars (8 ct): $2.50
    - $1.00/2 coupon from Kellogg insert in 8/5/07 paper (got 2nd insert from MIL)

    Kellogg's Pop-tarts toaster pastries (8 ct): $2.00
    Kellogg's Pop-tarts toaster pastries (8 ct): $2.00
    - $1.00/2 coupon from Kellogg insert in 8/5/07 paper

Geisha canned pineapple (20 oz) = $0.69 (in ad coupon)
Geisha canned pineapple (20 oz) = $0.69 (in ad coupon)
Geisha canned pineapple (20 oz) = $0.69 (in ad coupon)

    Hershey's 100 Calorie Bars (7 ct) = $1.50
    - $0.75/1 coupon from SmartSource insert in 6/17/07 paper
    Hershey's 100 Calorie Bars (7 ct) = $1.50
    - $0.75/1 coupon from SmartSource insert in 6/17/07 paper (got 2nd insert from MIL)
    - $1.00/2 coupon from August Walgreen's EasySaver catalog

    Product total: $29.07
    Tax on candy bars: $0.09
    Total before coupons: $29.16
    Coupon total: $8.50
    Out of pocket: $20.66

Earned register rewards (good on next purchase): $11.00
Kellogg's rebate by mail (allow up to 8 weeks): $10.00
    Additional savings: $21.00

    Final total: -$0.34

(If I had not done the other shopping, I would have come out $3.00 ahead on the Kellogg's deal alone. <faint>)

I ran these numbers ahead of time (ok, I forgot the tax on the Hershey's) and used the Final Total to decide if this was a good deal. Actually, I used my price list to be sure that the pineapple and the candy were good deals. I don't normally buy candy but at $0.25 for a box of 700 calories, I thought it might be nice to have in my desk drawer.

Point is, I'm counting the $20.66 OOP in my budget now (actually $18.66, cause I used a $2 RR from last week). I will use the RRs (and a gift card with my Easy Saver rebate on it) on my next trip to reduce that bill and count that actual OOP in my budget that month. Then assuming my Kellogg's rebate comes in the mail in about 8 weeks, I will count it in the budget as misc income.

How is everyone else doing on this deal? I wanted to try to find mor $1 off single item coupons, but I was afraid (rightly so) of waiting too long, having my area Walgreens sell out, and the deal falling apart.

oops, I didn't update the size of the cereal boxes from my notes on what to look for to what I actually bought. But you get the idea.

That's awesome!! I keep looking for good deals up here in Canada - we don't have a Walgreens

But I am very impressed that you able to work all the deals to not only get all your stuff free - but end up with a 34 cent bonus! You're an inspiration

Oh yeah, I forgot to budget in the Stamp and the envelope!! I think it is still a good deal, though.

Thanks Kaos, I really do want to be an inspiration. That's why I listed out where to get each coupon. (Sorry you don't have a Walgreens. )

Just a few months ago I had no idea how to do this. I've been reading and posting here (Thank you, Frugal Village, you are my inspiration!), using couponmom.com, and lately reading at afullcup.com. Those last two I learned about here.

I don't aspire to be one of those with the grocery carts full of stuff I'd never use for a couple bucks. I just want to feed my family and make the best use of our money. Most of the time, that means boring store brands.

latierra84, my cashier just looked annoyed, but oh well!

I went in for the same deal yesterday and tried two different Walgreens and the RR would not print if I used my coupons. I figured it was still a good deal at $3 for ten boxes of cereal/bars/poptarts so I did it without and I'm just going to use my RR to buy more cereal/bars with my coupons. I was pretty disappointed though. It would have been a much sweeter deal at -$1, lol. My dh thought I was nuts. $4 is $4 though and I wanted my discounts. I even talked to the manager and they wouldn't help me. Only one reward would print which makes no sense at all. If the coupons were discounting the products too much, then none of the rewards should have printed.

    I got:

    4 boxes of cereal
    4 boxes Nutri-grain bars
    2 boxes of Pop-Tarts

    Total: 23
    Minus 5 dollars in coupons=18
    Minus 11 in register rewards=7
    Minus 10 dollar rebate= +3 dollars

I am going to do the deal again at Kroger on shopping day. They are starting to give 'cash back on next purchase' as well. They have cereal, rice krispy treats and eggos on a great deal. With coupons/rebate/cash bonus it comes out better than free.

Great job! I am impatiently waiting for the Walgreens to open in our area! They had a sign up in January- Walgreens coming soon- and they are still not opened!

I have heard that they have tons of great deals there!
