No good loss leaders
Our grocery stores around here have not been having many good loss leaders lately it seems. My pantry is getting low as I've not been doing much stockpiling--waiting for some good sales. I'm just wondering if anyone else is noticing this in their area.

I feel like I should redo my price book. My best prices haven't been seen in quite awhile.

Yep, My same thoughts today as well. I'm getting low on some things, but there haven't been any good sales for some reason. For me, last good one was back in late June, some 4th of July picnic food items.

~Up until 2 weeks ago our last great sales week was in May. But now a new Shoprite opened nearby and the other stores are running lots of good sales. Notice I didn't say 'great'. DH is stopping after work today to pick up some of those deals, including bacon for less than $2lb, ice cream 60% off and $1lb produce. "Great" to me is like the sale on bacon I got last year; $1.50 a pack. I bought the limit, 8, and we're just finishing the last pack this week.~

I've noticed more & more of the "loss leaders" really aren't good deals. BOGO cereal is not a good deal when 1) the first box of cereal is $5 and 2) the grocery store won't let you use your $1/2 coupon because *technically* you're only buying one, they are giving you the second one

Even the meat, it's getting so that lately chicken legs/thighs/drum *on sale* are 99c/lb. Nothankyouverymuch!
Lately, our Price Chopper has had sales that are "30% off" this or "40% off" that. Yeah, 30% off what...the MSRP which is only 30c more than what Price Chopper's normal price is so you're really only saving pennies...

Same here. Sigh.
I'm beginning to wonder if chicken will ever be on sale again. At least on sale that is really a sale.Donna

It is the same here. I thought there would be some good "Back to School" sales, on peanut butter, jelly, juice boxes, etc. Nope. Maybe Labor day weekend sales will be better. My stockpile is not even a "stockpile". We had used almost all of ours up, and given much away before we moved in June. I haven't seen any good sales since then. I do have quite a few Eggo waffles in my chest freezer from a sale a couple of weeks ago, and some "Fast Fixin" chicken patties that I got free with sale/coupon, but that is about it for the stockpile. I told DH I would be serving chicken patties between two waffles, but he was not amused.

Syrup or ketchup? Maybe split the difference ... red sweet and sour sauce? Your Dh clearly has no culinary adventure in his soul!

Prices just seem to keep going up around here! I agree with you ladies, I haven't seen a real "sale" price on anything lately. I have to dig through my coupons today and hope for the best while I shop this evening

You know why dont you? When prices rise which they have on food an average of 19% this year then the loss leaders become scarce. Same thing with the coupons. I just read an aritcle on food prices rising a few days ago thats where I got the 19%. I am buying less things and paying more per pay day. Dont know what else to do. Have to eat.

I agree with this. I used to be able to feed us for around $200 a month with good sales and coupons. Not anymore. No way. Not if we want to have milk, meat, or produce. I suppose we could live on pasta, rice and beans, but I think DH would just resort to sneaking off to Sonic for a burger, and then we wouldn't be saving anything.
I just had to share this link with you all:

Maybe I could open my own "House of Chicken and Waffles". LOL.

I've noticed fruit hasn't dropped in price this summer, as in past years. Often we could pick it up for under $1/lb. and I'd jam, can or freeze it. Not this summer. I'm using my connections to access free food. Lots of trading and bartering will be happening this year.
I did notice sugar was down to $8/10 kg. from $12. Last year it went down to $6 this time of year, but I'm not holding my breath. I picked up a bag for canning and making jam and juice.
