Thank you everyone, I've got so much good stuff to go through.

Frugalityisgood~Thanks for those awesome websites. I can't wait to do some real comparison shopping.

I told my best friend about that website and we found 3 cities in common. It's a dream of ours to raise our kids together.

I know I'm jumping into the discussion late, but I have to put in my plug for Utah. I live in a suburb of Salt Lake City, and it's one of the safest "big cities" out there. It's clean and beautiful here, 4 seasons (although winter is generally quite temperate), safe, family-oriented, good schools etc. Cost of living is very reasonable. (I am 25 years old and own my own home...I have multiple friends that are in the same situation.) I wouldn't live in Utah County (Provo, Orem etc) or southern Utah (St. George etc), but I would definitely, definitely recommend Salt Lake City.

I live in Fl now and wouldn't suggest it. No seasons and high prices and not the best schools. I moved to FL from NH and wouldn't suggest that place either. High housing cost and definitely not a slow paced life. It amazes me when I go back there how busy and fast everyone lives there. I never noticed it until I moved to Fl. One good thing about FL, people are real friendly here.

Did you ever give some thought to another area of California? It's a big state!

Coming in late but I have to add western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. I am in Asheville which is quite expensive (tourist area) but Cherokee, Jackson, Swain, Haywood and McDowell counties still have a sane COL and are so beautiful.
