$6.35 left in the bank account.......
Scary, huh? It's actually kind of good news
.
We've had so many car and medical crisis in the last few months, combined with not spending wisely, that our savings account has dwindled down to almost nothing (I would panic when there was only about $20 left in checking and would transfer some from savings, then generally fail to repay savings...boo-hiss). I decided at the beginning of December (when money is the tightest, since that's when the morgage is due) that enough is enough.
So, on top of the mortgage eating most of the check, our central heat dies and we have to buy a part that is fortunately less than $100. Payment for DH's monthly meds came out to the tune of $40 (and our health savings account is drained, so no reimbursement). Our car insurance went up by $20. So on and so forth.
The checking balance got tinier and tinier, and on Wednesday I went to the grocery store and spent $91 (included cat food and litter). DH came home and announced that he's going to have to buy gas the next day......"Uh, honey, you can't do that, because we have $6.35 left till payday". So I got him to drive my car to work on Thursday to save having to buy gas that day, which got us through till Friday (DH gets paid 2x monthly)
So we made it through to the end of the pay period with $6.35! No moving money from savings! It felt very nice to be able to make a notation in my "account notebook" that showed a balance forward
I'm feeling cautiously optimistic that I may be getting the finances under control.....

Cool! I think that's a big step. It's easy to take "other money" for granted- most people find themselves doing this with credit cards, which of course is even worse than stealing from the savings account.

Its such a small thing but it makes you feel so much better to know you didn't touch the savings. Well done.

That is awesome! I was in a similar situation 6 months ago, but I was taking out paydoay loans to cover everything (yikes!). I had some major legal bills to pay and was robbing Peter to pay Paul.
What a wonderful feeling! You go, girl!

Yikes is right! My best friend is (or was a few months ago, I haven't asked lately) stuck in an endless loop with a payday loan place....they've been makikng payments to those people for *years*. I felt so bad for her, because it was a last-ditch effort to pay some bills, and has ended up costing them sooo much

At least you had a balance in the check book! You are having one of those weeks, we have all been there. You are doing great though!
