Default need 2nd mortgaage to buy groceries

I know food prices have gone way up but jeez.......Normally I dont buy alot of premade or junk foods. It is mostly DH, DD and I here at home so unless the grandchildren are coming, I seldom buy any of that. Well, with the holiday around the corner, I hit 2 grocery stores tonight. I will admit, I went a bit crazy, but I bought food for the next week with a steady stream of company coming. Save a lot cost me 50.00...not too bad. But Giant Eagle turned out to the tune of 135.00! WOW. And I have pretty full pantry and a ham already bought. I was really shocked. Now of course, I feel guilty for buying premade pie crusts....I could have made them way cheaper...but with all the company, time is limited....next year I am planning ahead..making pies, cakes and the like and freezing the darn things. Anyone else surprised how much groceries cost this week

I had been spending between $50 and $60 a week on all our groceries/toiletries and cat food/litter. I haven't changed what I buy and I still use coupons on the things I don't buy generic and we are now paying between $60 and $70 a week. I know it's because of rising prices. It's costing us between $10-$20 more a week now, which is $40-$80 more a month. My budget has had to be adjusted to reflect the new weekly cost of groceries.

Around here, it's not uncommon that prices jump in December, again in Mar/April. It goes down some afterwards, but there a big hikes, so then they can do "sales"for the holidays. Got the price book to prove it. they deny it..lol. But numbers are numbers.

I can not believe the price of meat. It makes me sick to look at the prices of the packages.

I try to do a steak stir-fry at least once a week but my DH is still very hungry after eating it. I throw a ton of vegetables in and I even make rice noodles to go with it but it is just not enough for him.

    Oh well

I can't believe adding just a few extra holiday staples can make our bills skyrocket!

Hey, does anyone want to do a grocery challenge after Christmas?
Like maybe we try to only buy and cook frugal things, all 100% from scratch?
Maybe I will go post this under the Tightwad Gazzette area

I think a grocery challenge would be great! I have been stocking up (like a squirrel) for winter. DH was laid off yesterday (he is a landscaper), and will be working when the weather is mild/or it snows. I will really need to curb the grocery store spending/the price of everything is just crazy!
Bought my new oven 1/08 and loving it!

I agree about prices. If you look at the basic food commodities, they have skyrocketed.

Try thinking of it this way. Prices are not rising, the value of your $1 is falling.

The federal gov't is now 53 trillion in debt including IOU's for soc sec and medicare. They create all these dollars from debt (US Treasuries), the more dollars that exist, the less each one is worth.

I don't know where this will all end up, but I know from inflation, I am getting poorer and poorer every year and seeing many people drop out of the middle class.

Go read the Financial Report of the United States Govenment that was released by the Treasury and GOA this week (It's online). It's an eye opening report and released very quietly each year before Christmas. You won't hear about it on the news.

I have been reading this forum for a long time. We all think in terms of our personal finances, but we should also be very concerned about what our government is doing financially because they have the power to borrow us as a country into oblivion.

Earlier this year the interest on the federal debt was 164 million dollars per hour.

I spent $130 on groceries this week and I NEVER spend that much. I didn't buy a lot of extras, just your basic day to day items. I do, however, fix 3 meals a day for 3-4 people, sometimes more if the kids have friends over. I also bought a turkey and a ham to put in the freezer for later in the winter. Still...that amount was enough to make me gasp.

My last trip to the actual grocery store was somewhat disappointing. I know I was also stocking up a little bit but it still felt as if I was spending to much for three bags of groceries which were not completely full.

I am planning on using more of my stockpile next month. I also seem to be stockpiling for the winter like a squirrel. Guess I should stop running around.

Within the food manufacturing industry word is it will get even higher after first of year. The cost of rising prices has not caught up with the consumer yet which is scary looking at their figures. I agree I cook all from scratch, and have noticed a huge increase this year as well as this past month .

I never spend much over fifty, but today with a bag of shrimp, and ingredients to make sushi christmas eve I went up to $99.89 and that was with a free pound of butter and 8.00 off 50.00 that stop& shop was doing this week, and also had about ten dollars in other coupons, and I did buy a lot of fresh veggies, hopefully I won't have to go in another grocery store till the end of next week.

Meat is killing me. I'd go veggie but dh would think he is going to die of starvation if I do. LOL

I have been eating more things like soup and grilled cheese for dinner. We have also had to cut down on milk and eggs.
