    Default Vaccuum shopping

Sigh, my vaccuum just died a painful, unnatural death, so I will be shopping for a new one.

What kind of vaccuum do you have? Do you like it and if so, or if not, why?

I don't want to spend a lot of money - as far under $200 as possible!

You know Karen, I have to weigh in on this subject. In the past I have owned some very expensive vaccuums. I've had a Kirby, I've had a Rainbow and then I had Phantom (the least expensive of the more expensive ones). At present I use a Hoover swivel vac and can truthfully say I like that little vac as much as any of the more expensive ones that I've owned. Now, a vaccuum cleaner salesman can come into your home after having used one and 'show you how inferior' it is by how much stuff his brand picks up. If you own a Kirby he can bring a Rainbow in and do it, if you own a Rainbow he can bring a Kirby in and do it (had it done both ways....lol) and so on and so forth. The truth is no vac picks up everything and it depends on how often, how thoroughly and how long you use and how often you change the bag or empty it, etc.... . I'll never have an expensive vac again, I've decided that anything over $200 is too much to spend on something that really doesn't change my life per dollar anymore than that. Jmho. I hope this helps, even just a little bit

I love my Dyson! It's the best vaccuum I've ever had. It's lightweight, has all the attachments and gets up everything. It was $399 but worth every penny.

    I have a Eureka Maxima.

It is light weight, it is easy to use. It is bagless.

The extension hose is permanently connected and the attachment has a holder on the handle. I love it, works great.

    $39.99 at Target.

I would never, ever buy a vacuum cleaner for ove $60.00, just not worth it.

I have the Bissell Momentum and love it:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HS28AA"]Amazon.com: Bissell 3910 Momentum Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner: Kitchen & Dining[/ame]

Favorite features are: bagless (no bags to buy), WASHABLE filter (no filters to buy!), pretty long cord, spinning brush attachment, not very heavy, helps propel itself, and good power.

It is a bit top heavy and likes to tip over if I'm vigorously using the hose and attachments, but it's no big deal to me.

I had $45 in Amazon gift certificates so I bought it from them. Free shipping too!

I have a Dyson as well! If anything happened to this one, I would go out and buy another. Well worth the money. I've had mine 5 yrs now. No problems

I like using Dyson. The roller ball style is very easy to manuver.

I never spend much n vacuums anymore, because they DO 'just die' no matter how high-end they are.

I went to Big Lots a few months ago when mine died and got a Eureka Uno for $60. I checked out other places for this type and they sell for $134 minimum elsewhere. Check Big Lots, but don't buy anything that looks as if it was already opened or used.

I think vacuum shopping is all relative to what your needs are...and how much you want to spend. I have no idea how anyone goes through a vac every few years (several of my friends do?) I have a Ricaar professional that I paid about 400.00 for 7 years ago. I wanted something that would pick up dog and cat hair. They let me bring it home and try it before I bought it! Anyway....it's heavy and a workhorse, but it WORKS and I have never had a single problem with it. I tried my dd's Dyson and hated it....JMO I also have an old canister vac (piggy style) that is probably 40 years old that I use on my hardwoods and it works great.

I have a cheapy hoover that I found was just as good as any other vacuum. My last "expensive" one, didn't last very long. I don't think things are "built like they used to be".

I had good luck with a Sears Kenmore canister vac that last 14 years with only one repair in all that time! I just got a Dyson this year, and if you have animals especially, it really does an amazing job on the hair and dander. But that isn't under $200.00

Consumer Reports magazine top three highest rated are all about $250-$300 and those reports don't always work for me, but here are the models in case you are interested and can get the same a little further up North.

    * Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922
    * Hoover WindTunnel 2 U8311-900
    * Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932

I've got to admit, I'm very, very hard on vacuums - I kill 'em, and I kill them often - I used to average at least one vacuum per year (if not two) -

My mom & dad gave me an Oreck for Christmas about 3 years ago - and other than taking it in for it's annual check up (I call it the vacuum doctor visit), I've only taken it in one other time (it was clogged up with pet hair)

Oreck also has a 10 year warranty - so IF I killed it, but so far so good, I wouldn't have to purchase a new one.

Otherwise, I have no advice, I've been through almost every vacuum out there under $150 - they all died at my hands -

    good luck in your search!

I had a basic Panasonic for several years that worked great. It did not have any attachments, but that was fine, because at the time I lived in a single-story house. Now that I live in a two-story with carpeted stairs, I have a cheap, red Bissell (I think). It has the attachments to make cleaning the stairs easy, but it clogs ALL the time, so I'm shopping for a replacement, too.
