    Default A coupon delemna.....

Ok so today I went to CVS with my coupon for product A. It was a good deal BUT when I got there, I discovered one of their "WOW!" deals for an older version of product A (had different packaging) The price for the "WOW!" deal was 2.99. My coupon was for 4.00 so "hurray" I make money on the deal. BUT when the coupon scans it takes off the 1st 4.00 but then on the second coupon it says it can only do 1.98 additional instead of the other 4.00. !!!!! Now the coupon does not say "up to 4.00" and it does not say that it can only be for the amount purchased. It says the retailer can redeem the coupon for the full 4.00. So by their policy, they are taking MY $2.02!!!!
Am I wrong here???? The manager did something to give me the full 4.00 so I got it anyway but it is annoying that their registers are programmed to do this. If she had not said anything and just deducted the 1.98, I would have never known and CVS makes money off MY deal.

Here in AL ( at least everywhere I've shopped in AL) you can't get cash back if the coupon is worth more than the item's price. You simply get the item free....but you still have to pay tax on the free item. Maybe GA is the same?

Yes, the same thing happens to me all the time. I've never actually gotten money back from a purchase.

I am not sure if it's a state law or just store policy, but the only way I've ever "made" money on a purchase is with things like CVS Extra Care Bucks, or rebates, or some other "buy-product-A-get-product-B-free" deal.

"Overage" is not a standard policy in most stores. Sometimes you get lucky, but most often not. They usually just adjust the price to the item being free.

Same here....with the computerized registers, they automatically "adjust" the coupon, even when doubling...it will "double" it only to make it free. I'm happy to get it free.

I was not getting change back...I had other stuff too that I thought the difference would apply to. But the point I am making is that why should the store get the difference? They will turn that coupon in and get the full value so they end up making my coupon money. Maybe I shouldn't have expected it but I still think that the store shouldn't get the free money either...

Free is still a good deal. Nothing worth getting mad about imo. Life's too short to be mad about 2 dollars. I know in NY, we can't get money back on coupons.
Back on the frugal bandwagon for the third time and hoping to slash my debt by the end of 11' and start saving again!

I am not "mad" at the 2 dollars as much as "who" will get them. Again, the point I am trying to make is either I or CVS will get the 2 dollars because that coupon is getting 4.00 from the manufacturer. CVS gets the benefit for my leg work.
Please don't misunderstand, I am not sitting around seething over it. I brought it up here as a question to you all....if the coupon is getting redeemed for the full amount from the manufacturer, who should get the benefit? The store or the person who brought it in?
I am not suffering for the 2 dollars, just annoyed that CVS has a policy to keep it.
