Question Thoughts on a possible $800/$1600 check to the American population

What are your thoughts about the government thinking about handing out $800 for singles, $1600 for couples check to the US population in order to stave off a recession?

If you give a person a fish, you feed them for a day, if you teach a person to fish, you feed them for a lifetime.

So some will blow the money quick - which is what the government wants; some will send it to their credit card companies; some will save it. What will you do?

Bernanke (current US Fed Chief) said that we needed to get the American people (actually the word was probably "consumers" as we are no longer referred to as "citizens" anymore) to spend.

We'd probably apply the $1600 to the principal of our mortgage.

OOh, I'll put mine toward the new carpeting fund. The carpet in my house hasn't been replaced since the house burned in 1981. It REALLY needs it.

Personally, I don't think it's going to stimulate the economy much. Also, if we do get it, we won't be running out and spending it (which the government hopes we do). We'll stick it in our EF (which is what economists advise us to do.)

We'll probably buy mattresses for 2 kid's beds, buy 2 more chairs for the dining room table & save the rest

We would finish paying off our truck with it! It is our last debt besides our mortgage, so that will be a nice payoff...especially with government money! Just don't forget...you'll have to pay income taxes on it at the end of the year!

As long as the recipients have paid at least a minimum amount of taxes in the past year, then I can say I wouldn't squawk if somebody sent me an $800 check. I can say that I probably wouldn't spend it - I would put it in my snowball.

Well...we'd sure like it! We'd probably get new tires for one of the cars, oil changes for both cars...that'd come to about $600...the other $1000 I'd love to throw at our CC!

We are always strapped for cash, since DH and I are both full-time students! We work, and pay taxes too. A check of any size would be spent for needed items that we have been putting off, like tires, trips to the dentist, etc.

The government hopes people spend it in the U.S. or on U.S. made products. It said in our paper today that they wouldn't want people buying a laptop made in China but tires made in Ohio. Or take a vacation in the U.S.

This has been on my mind. Sure, I'd love to have some extra cash on hand. I would probably stick some in our ef and put the rest in our basement. We have been doing a little here and there and could finish the basement with that.
