Getting out of the house
Dh has been away for work for weeks, I've been stuck home with sick, cranky kids. DH knows that the minute he walks in that door, I want to escape for an hour or two.
So he told me to "go to Starbucks". That hanging out at Starbucks with a book or my knitting is far cheaper than "going shopping" just for the sake of getting out of the house.
I actually meet up with a group to knit there once a week. For the price of a hot chocolate, that's 2 hours out of the house, talking to grownups. It was started by someone who left flyers in yarn shops and advertised it on the internet.
The other place I go just to get out of the house is the library. I browse, look at magazines and cookbooks, curl up in a chair and read unbothered and I can come home with as many books and DVDs as I want.
The idea is that I just want to get away from the house and the kids and take a break. But if I go wandering in stores, I'm bound to spend money on things that simply weren't on a list of needs.

this is a good idea. I do something like it myself. Except I meet with a group of ladies for stitching/knitting/whatever twice a week. Once at the library, where it's free, and once at a local community arts center, where it's also free. So are the drinks! I like those odds!
I don't have any little kids at home, but I still need to get out every now and then to keep myself in the real world. I hang out with mostly older women. They are an incredible source of information and wisdom.

It's so true! I love the library. Plus, when I get home I feel rested. If I'm out shopping, I get home feeling tired still--waiting in lines, getting around other shoppers, etc.
It sounds like you have a great plan. I hope you get to go soon!Mom to two crazy boys
