WHAT!!!!
That can not be!!! You mean to tell me that formula is $1 per ounce!?
That is OUTRAGIOUS. HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!
It's been 18 years since I had to use formula as a supplement- and the cost was high, but closer to affordable. If I had to rack my brains... I'd say it was about $6 per tall can of liquid ready to feed (?24oz?).
I don't think inflation has caused it to go up that much.
I wondered why the formula was under lock and key!! I actually thought is was to protect the formula from people trying to poison babies. (like the Tylenol incident).
18 yrs ago when I was breastfeeding, my opposite sister used condensed milk and watered it down. I wouldn't recommend it- since I don't know much about it. But apparently that's what they used in the days before 'formula'. Actually, don't do it- her babies were scrawny, constipated and had thin hair. (she was proud of the thin baby thing- said mine were rolly-pollies- and I was proud of THAT! LOL! )

You would be even more disgusted to know that that same formula probably can be got for half the cost in other first world countries. I about had a heart attack when I came to visit my family in the US and found out how much formula was. Needless to say, when I moved back to the US, my suitcase was filled to the brim with it!

I use to write the formula company for coupons. I also signed up for a club with one of the formula companies that sent a coupon for a free can of the of the pwdered or (liquid 6pk I think) of formula once a month. My son couldn't use that brand at the time but money was really tight so I would use the free coupon and then exchange the formula for the right brand or sell it to a co-worker. The first time I did the exchange thing I felt bad about it, but the reality of it was everybody got the money that they were suppose to get. The stores got my coupon for 1 cont of formula and both formula companies are paid by what the store orders, so I got over it.

canned milk formula
There was a recipe for this in the TWG, but she put warnings about how it wasn't the best (breastfeeding and formula is better) but I think she thought it would be a good backup formula if you ran out. It contained more than just the milk. Corn syrup for sure. Where is my TWG. Grrr. I don't know. If you have WIC you should have plenty of formula.

If that's the cost of regular formula can you imagine how much the predigested one is (Nutramagen). When I used it for my son (colic) 10 years ago it was about $375 a month. I can't imagine what it is now.

Yes, it was a happy day when my son was able to begin drinking whole milk. For various reasons he was the one who could not BF, and started off on the special high-calorie, premie blend of formula. When he could switch to regular iron formula the pediatrician let me in on a secret, store-brand formula is equal to the name brands and about 1/2 the price. Like some babies tolerate Similac and Enfamil differently, they will also tolerate store-brands differently. Walmart's, which emmulate Enfamil, worked for my son the best. It is still expensive, but a little easier on the wallet.

Outrageous prices.
" May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."

Congratulations on your new daugther! I am sorry it's so expensive to supplement. However, this is JMO - I am not a health care provider. But it seems like nowadays doctors are quick to say newborns are not gaining enough when solely BF and they need supplementing. My daughter weighed 6 lb 4 oz at birth and was BF solely for 13 month (solids at 6 mo). I was very firm in the fact that as long as she was gaining weight at a steady pace and thriving - I refused to fall into the she is not the biggest baby on the block trap. Sorry off topic a little - but just don't give up BF - your milk will sate that little one and she will thrive! With our next baby we would not qualify for WIC and there is no way I could afford that kind of expense with formula -so I better be lactating and by the gallon (LOL)! Congrats again!

I think the cost of formula is outrages. I mother used carnation caned milk and karo syrup. We were healthly. I did that with my first kid. I was told to stop breast feeding because they put me on steroids after he was born. I had bells palsy. I tried the different formulas first and he held nothing down. I don't know how anybody can aford to just bottle feed their child. Buying formula can put you in the poor house.
FernYes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

Congratulations!
I can't believe the formula prices either. I exclusively breastfeed, but I have the sample cans from the hospital and from signing up with companies online. They sent a few cans for registering after he was born in January. I keep them on hand, just in case he ever decides to take a bottle...yeah right.

I got a whole case of powdered formula free at my pediatrician's office just for filling out a card that was there in the waiting room. It was for one of the major brand, I can't remember which. I also signed up at the websites of similac, enfamil, and good start. They'll send out some awesome coupons, sometimes up to 8.00. Alot of people even sell these on ebay. After I ran out of these coupons, I started to use the store brands - Walmart, Kroger, Target. I compared the ingrediants and they really are about the same.
