$5.50 a gallon for gas!!!!?????!!!!
Here's an article I was reading that says gas prices are only going to get worse and that the price per barrell could go up to $180 which would make our price $5.50 a gallon!! This I'm sure does not include taxes - so like in NY we'd see a lot more and probably CA cuz they're always high too.

THey do say that that is the magical price that people will dramatically cut their useage, I don't know about everyone else, but I have already started to try to cut my useage - $3.67 a gallon here is southern upstate NY. We are trying to walk more and will be running all our errands and shoppingf 1 day a week. Dh only works 3 12 hour days so that helps too.

I really will be riding my bike more if this happens! We have a friend who rides his bike to work 12 miles each way during the summer months. He started doing this last summer due to the gas prices then.

I bet they will....It's close to $4 in some places, not too far off. Things will only get worse before they get better.

Sounds like the cigarette prices a few years back. When I smoked and the prices hit over $5.00 apack I said that's it and I quite. I thought it was an expensive way to kill myself.
Unfortunately a car is a necessary item for most people. I saw on the news last night the RV makers are really taking a hit and stopping production for a alittle while.
My DH and I have switched cars for a while. He has an SUV and I have a little Toyota Echo. I do my errands one day a week and he does alot of traveling for work so it just made sense to switch. I just hope he keeps my car clean on the inside.LOL

California is always going to be more expensive...not just because of taxes but because of their environmental laws...they have to have the higher octane in their cars.
I'm really glad we live in town. I know if gas gets REALLY bad, we are close enough to walk the kids to school, walk to get groceries (although they are more $$ here in town than out at the commissary).

Gas here (South Carolina) is $3.45 in my small town. Diesel is $3.99. I really feel for those who live paycheck to paycheck. The increase in gas prices is hard on my family but we are getting by. I can't imagine what we will do if it gets to $4 a gallon here.
Unfortunately, we can't walk to work or any stores. It is a 10 mile drive to the post office, grocery stores, gas stations, library, school and everything else. My husbans has to drive 82 miles round trip to work. We are already being conservative with our driving.
Not only higher gas prices but that makes everything else go up. Grocery stores, clothing stores and your basic necessities all get to the store by truck. On the news this morning they were mentioning something about truckers and the economy. Something about them being the backbone (basically) of our country - getting the goods to the stores.

I'm thinking of getting a bike with a toddler seat on it so me and my kids can bike it this summer.
I would like to move into town but I heard water prices are outrageous right now

Not much to cut back on for me. And with summer coming and my kids in baseball I think 2 practices and 2 games a week are going to be the furthest away. The grocery store is near there so will stop there on those days. Other then that biking and walking will do us some good!

gas
It has already majorly affected my world.....I haven't a clue where they get $5.50??!!
It doesn't help that hubbie works in the RV industry, so the gas prices are a MAJOR thing to us, even though he builds the high end models where the people that buy them have enough money not to care about high prices. He is scheduled for another shut down
but on the upside he uses his motorcyle for driving in the summer...........for me, I can walk to the school for the kids and either use public transportation or car pool for my work. I did lay in bed last night and think about if I wanted to sell my van.........

We're moving to California in June and I'm not looking forward to the prices. There won't be much cutting down of our usage as we rarely do any driving unless we have too.
I noticed gas locally for 87 jumped from $3.39 to $3.44. It seems ever 2-3 days the price jumps at least 5 cents.

Yep scares me with gas prices rising! The only way people will be able to cope is to cut down on extra spending. I was seriously thinking about taking on a serving job on weekends for the summer in addition to my work as a temp and basically save every penny I made. Unfortunately, the only restaurants worth working in are about 30 min. away. Will people even go out to eat anymore? Also temp. work that's one area that companies would definitely cut out. I'm definitely saving all my refund checks!
Also I can't cut down anymore than what i have done now on driving. I have to get to work which means driving a great distance. jobs are scares where I live.
SAw on CNN where this one mom and pop trucking company cut their own wages and their employees and built there own fuel storage truck to drive to Mexico where diesel is $2.00 a gallon. The first day they brought back 500 gallons so they went down the next day and border officials stopped them and told them they are only allowed to bring back something like 116 gallons per trip. What happened to the free market system????? what does the government expect us to do????Last edited by BetterLateThanNever; 04-23-2008 at 10:18 AM.

we're looking at getting a bike trailer for our little ones. I don't know how much water is where you live, but I pay less than $30 a month for a family of 5, and I've been told by other people that that's high. Where I used to live I payed that for 3 months for me and my son. I think the savings on gas could be worth paying for water, plus many times in town you have natural gas and that still seems like the cheapest form of heat right now. So, it may be something to look into.

UGGHH... I quit my 100+ mile roundtrip per day job back when gas was $2.60/gal. I was spending every other paycheck on gas. I now work from home, but that doesn't make much money compared to an out of home job. DH works 10 miles roundtrip, so not too bad and once the weather warms up a little more, he'll be taking his motorcycle to work and that will cut way down on the gas as well. As sad as it is, it actually saves us money and will continue to save us money to drive 100 miles to get our groceries. I suggested DH make a small trailor for the motorcycle so we could just take that instead to save gas. I think we'll be talking about doing that again.
