Good point. Canning supplies are only available seasonally here and don't last too long. I'll add it to my list this week to check on supplies and stock up. Thanks!

Thanks for the reminder. I don't can anymore myself, but my daughter has asked me to teach her how this year...so I think I will gift her some lids.

Thanks for letting me know. My mother is going to teach me how to can this year. Question are canning jars designed so that you only need one size lid or are there different sized lids for different sized jars?

Hi! There are just 2 sizes, wide mouth and regular. You won't need the wide mouth lids unless you specifically get those jars.

Here's my question (as a non-canner)....why don't you reuse the old ones? Are they one time use only? Just curious...

Yes, after they have been sealed, they can not be used again for canning, the seal will not be secure and you run the risk of your food going bad. I have reused the seals if I was just using the jar for storing dry goods in my cupboard, such as pasta or grains.

became4347 - you can use the bands (screw part) over and over as long as they aren't rusted. They won't seal well if rusted. But you must always use new lids.
Thanks to all for the reminder to stock up. Going out tomorrow. I still have a few from last year - I found a bunch of unopened boxes at a yard sale for 25 ccents each! Only have a couple boxes left.

Thanks for the reminder! I plan on canning many more things this year, just in case.
