70$CDN for two weeks for Food..ack help
I have approximately 70$cdn for food for the until March 14th. We couldve put off our rent until then but I decided not too as we did that the last few months. Our landlord is nice but I dont want to take advantage of that.
So my problem is to feed myself and my picky husband until his next unemployment cheque comes in.
Any suggestions
He doesnt eat veggies, casseroles, soups and anythign like that though I do. He doesnt like stir frys or breakfast for dinners either...You can see how hard this is for me..
Thanks in advance,

wow....sounds like you got your hands full with a picky eater. i was going to recommend some casseroles, but he don't like those either. if you buy a few pounds of hamburger, you could make, tacos, nachos, sloppy joes. i would have alot more suggestions for you if your dh wasn't so picky, lol. good luck!!

I try not too but I partially blame his mom and how when he refused to eat what she made she would go out of her way and make him something else...sigh...
He will eat tacos and sloppy joes so those are good suggestions.
Thanks

Hmmm . . .that's tricky. I'll just post some ideas, take what you can use -- toss the rest. Hopefully it will give you some ideas as well.
Buy a chicken-- roast it.
Meal #1- serve large meaty pieces , with veggies, potatoes, etc.
Meal #2- take some of the meat from the smaller pieces and make chicken salad. Serve on lettuce bed .
Meal #3- boil the carcass and then pick the meat off the bonesmake white sauce with scrappy pieces added. Serve over biscuits or rice or mashed potatoes.
Cut any meat into smaller pieces-- looks like much more that way. For instance. . . .cut a chicken breast into slices, bread and fry for chicken strips-- rather than serving one large chicken breast. . .
Will your dh eat stroganoff? I make that with about 3/4 the meat the recipe calls for, with out complaints. . . or with hamburger.
Dang--- I'm really feeling thankful for my NOT picky family that gratefully eats whatever I put on the table.

a nice small chicken would get you 2 meals at least and a pot of soup for your lunches., my dh is the same, except he loves breakfast for dinner'...
as well since you are so tight and unemployed....if i may suggest with no offense to look into the food bank...we always donate heavily there and i'm sure if i ever need it...i will swallow and go...
baked potatoes are an awesome meal with cheese (slcs work well) and canned chili if he likes that..or homemade is cheaper...
hot dogs..are cheap..so are hamburgs...i think make an inventory of what you have, then make a menu for 14 days...keep a day here or there for leftovers and freeze them if you wont eat them right away...and use mostly what you got...and use the 70 for what you NEED to fill in that meal....and take out those flyers for sales.... the sales this week here are pretty good..

Hi again,
I wanted to thank everyone for your wonderful tips. We have one more week to go and all will be well again.
I also picked up a parttime job watching two small boys which I'm excited about. That will bring in 480$more each month which I'm going to use to start a stockpile.

Hi again,
I just thought I'd update everyone on how we're doing here on the Island.
I sold an really nice piece of jewelry on eBay yesterday so we were able to stock up on groceries earlier tonight. The grocery store in our area (Sobeys) was having a good sale so I picked up a lot of staples. The other good thing about this store is I can collect airmiles points which I can later use for store gift certificates( will be used just for the stockpile though)
I"m going to hit Costco also this weekend as I like the meat there better and start concentrating on starting a stockpile. My wonderful dh is letting me buy with my first two babysitting cheques two freestanding pantries; one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.
Hopefully we will never be in this much of dire straits again

You should look at some of sunshine's previous posts on frugal meals and how to eat on like $30 a week or something like that.
I always reference them when we're expecting a tight month.

Thanks for the information. I've perused some of her posts will look again more closely. I can probably adapte her suggestions to higher canadian food prices.

Will you hubby eat hamburger steaks or salisbury steak....they are so easy and economical. My roomies beg me to make these. They are really good served with mashed potatoes and corn and it's better the TV dinner's version:
KIM'S BETTER THAN BANQUET SALISBURY STEAKS
2 lbs ground beef
1/2 c quick oats
salt/pepper/seasonings* of choice to taste
2-3 c gravy (see note)
Mix meat, oats and seasoning. Form into patties and place flat on jelly roll pan. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes or until slightly browned (this might sound like an extra step, but it gets all the extra grease out of the patties before the gravy is added). Remove from pan and place in roaster pan either stacked or flat in pan. Cover with gravy. Bake an additional 30-35 minutes until meat is done.
NOTE: Seasonings to use can include garlic powder/salt, onion powder/salt, adobo seasoning, chili powder. For gravy: use either packaged gravy mix, mixed according to directions or premade canned gravy; 3-4 bouillon cubes and 3 cups water, thickened with cornstarch; leftover gravy (that had been frozen for future use) or 2 pkg. onion soup mix, prepared according to pkg with cornstarch added for thickening.
Then there's always the old standby....meatloaf. I have a meatloaf cookbook if anyone is interested. Just send me a personal message if interested.Kim

Hubby doesnt like my meatloaf. Something from his childhood. The salisbury steak recipe sounds good though so I may try that. We eat A LOT of ground beef. Mostly Spaghetti and Manwiches though.

Here is a quick recipe from my FIL for his Taco Pie. Pretty cheap and filling.
Taco Pie
1 lb of ground beef
Taco Seasoning Mix
Can of Corn
Corn Muffin Mix
I just bround the ground beef, drain and add the taco seasoning mix. Then I add the corn and then put it all in a 8x8 pan. I put a little bit of cheese on that and then just make up the corn muffin mix according to the directions and pour it on top and bake for 15-20 minutes til the corn muffin mix is done. This is very filling and very adaptable. Sometimes if I don't have taco seasoning I'll add salsa or just a can of chopped tomatoes with some other seasonings.
This is a favorite at my house.~Kim~

What about mixing the hamburger with TVP? I have a friend who mixes her hamburger with reconstituted TVP and her husband hasn't found out yet. She is up to half and half. She adds in the TVP in with the raw hamburger so the hamburger will flavor the TVP.
