    Question Tortilla Question...

Does anyone make their own Flour Tortillas? If so, is it easy and/or worth it? Can you freeze them once you make them?

Also does anyone have a homemade taco seasoning recipe?

Thanks so much for your help.

    Wendy,
I have made flour tortillas in the past. They can be frozen. However, Since I was a novice at making them ....Well anyway I thought that it took longer than what I could afford to spend timewise. I think it is cheaper for me to stock up at the day old bread store and freeze them.

P.S. I was also put off by my tortillas ending up in the shape of Texas instead of perfectly round. lol

    Good luck!

I've made a zillion of the things. I usually just make them when I'm making dinner because they are so fast to make, HOWEVER, they do take a knack. Once you get it though, you'll find that homemade tortillas beat the other ones hands down (unless you like tasteless, gluey things).

try just making 4-5 at a time, then you won't be overwhelmed. if you want them softer, make them a bit thicker, and lay a damp towel between them and cover.

as far as recipes go, I don't use one anymore, but there are a kajillion on the web. Try them out.

Don't stack them uncooked... they'll glue together like nobody's business.

Have fun withthem. The ones that don't turn out so well, shallow (or deep)fry and liberally salt and presto! tortilla chips!

ive made tortillas once. i couldn't get them flat enough or round, and they seemed kinda chewy to me. but it was my first try...

heres the taco seasoning we use. my family loves it

    Serving Size: 10 tacos

    1 1/3 pounds ground chuck
1 1/2 tablespoons Corn Flour (i use corn meal)
    4 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
    1/2 teaspoon paprika
    1/4 teaspoon cumin
    1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
    1/4 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon dry minced onions
    1/2 teaspoon beef bouillon

Mix together all ingredient except the taco meat. Stir the spice mixture well making sure that all spices have been blended well.

Crumble ground beef and brown stirring well. Remove from heat, rinse with hot water and drain water and grease from beef. Return ground chuck to the pan and add taco seasoning. Add 3/4 - 1 cup water to ground beef and taco seasoning and simmer on medium low temperature for 20 minutes. Simmer until most of moisture has cooked away.

Remove from heat when moisture in meat as dissipated but meat is not dry.

I tried once- it was an abysmal failure.

However, since then, I have gotten adept at making corn tortillas (my preference anyway) but I HAVE found that you can't really make them all that big, because after a certain point, they won't hold together anymore.

I'm sure the flour ones would be easier now that I've gotten better at the corn.

    Default Flour Tortillas

Flour Tortilla are easy to make. Homemade ones are much thicker than the ones in the stores and therefore more filling. Also tastier. Whatever recipe you follow use very little baking powder. Cheap shortening or lard works best. They will be more chewy than store boughten.

i personally think its not worth making your own. its very time consuming. you can pick up a pack of flour tortillas at the store for about $1.00. if you do make your own, yes you can freeze them. my dh is hispanic & his grandmother always makes her own tortillas, but shes retired & has the extra time!!

I make my own flour tortillas when time allows. I follow the recipe in Not Just Beans. It's basically flour, shortening, and salt I think. I don't find it anymore time consuming than making my own bread or dinner rolls.

And they do taste better than the store bought ones.

A tortilla press is very handy for making your own.
