What's the secret to A-plus lunch packing?

"Always include a fruit. Always include a vegetable. Always include a good source of protein. Those are the big three. And then if you can add some fiber from whole grains, that's great, too," she says.

My ex has volunteered to foot the bill for scholl lunches for our son, which is very generous at $1.50/day plus $5 per month for snack.
The school lunch always includes fruit/veg/protein/grain/ and milk. He also has a choice of soup and sandwich or salad lunch if the hot lunch isn't appealing. It's much better than when I was in school. They aren't serving the deserts like the used to, either.

Great article Heather. I found the comparisons of the lunches especially interesting.

That was interesting. I know when dd was in public school, and I would accompany the class on field trips where students were required to pack a lunch, 90% of the kids brought lunchables. We have always thought they were yucky! We like bottled water for a beverage, especially if we are spending most of the day outside, like at the zoo.
