leftover ham "middle"
I dont know what to call the leftover middle of a ham?
Do I cook it like a whole chicken, then pick out tiny bits of ham?
Theres not much ham left, just fat.
If so, what do I make then?
Thanks if anyone knows hams !!!!!

My husband boils down the ham bone to gets the small amount of meat off the bone. Then uses that meat and some of the juice and mixes that into cooked egg noodles.

If it's the meat around the bone, just throw the whole thing in a pot and let it cook with potatoes and carrots. We throw in some onion too, bake up some cornbread and have dinner. There is usually some hidden meat in there somewhere!

I leave my ham bone a bit meaty. I then throw it in a pot like the other poster and make soup out of it. You can also throw beans in instead of veggies and have beans and ham.
Also, I add in a bit of vinegar to the pot. It leaches more of the nutrients out of the bone.Beak-1996, Toad-1998, and Q-1998

I had a bit of ham left over after xmas and this is what I did with it. You only need 1 cup of ham.
Potato and ham soup
3 medium potatoes
2 cups water
1 small onion
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp flour
pepper to taste
3 cups milk
1/2 tsp sugar
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup cooked ham
Peel potatoes and cut into 1 inch cubes. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add potatoes and cook until tender. Drain, reserving liquid. Set aside potatoes. Measure 1 cup cooking liquid, adding water if necessary; set aside.
Peel and finely chop onion. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. Add onion to saucepan; cook, stirring frequently, until onion is translucent and tender, but not brown.
Add flour to saucepan, season with pepper to taste. Cook 3 to 4 minutes. Gradually add potatoes, reserved liquid, milk and sugar to onion micture in saucepan stir well. Add cheese and ham. Simmer over low heat 30 minutes, stirring frequently.
Enjoy

Ok, I was starting to get worried about my cooking skills after reading how this bone soup grossed out so many readers here hahahah.
So..
I too extra care to make it.
I was not happy with the meat stuck to the bone and did not use it.
I cool the broth in the fridge for one day.
Skimmed the fat off.
I then added broth, lentils, lots of chopped ham, and chopped potatoes.
It was really really good.
I served it with corn muffins.
Since the ham was free and fed us for a week, it just makes sense to make this soup once a year.

Thanks for your help making this soup!!!!!!!

I have a ham "middle" cooking with some beans right now. I think they will be dinner tomorrow night as I like them better the next day!
