Yes, that was where all my syrup came from...Canada. They are also kings of producing lentils for some reason.

Even fruit syrups are high price if natural. I don't like corn syrup stuff, so shy away from cheap fruit syrups in the market. When I was a kid I loved boysenberry syrup used to put in on eggs and sausage as well as cakes.

Am growing lots of brambles. May try raspberry syrup next year if I have an overflow amount.

When you really get desperate you can make the really fake stuff:

    Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup

    2 Cups water
    1 cup sugar
    2 cups dark corn syrup
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon maple flavoring

Boil the water, sugar, syrup and salt over medium heat for 6-7 minutes:

Cool & add the maple flavoring.

~On a side note, can anyone tell me where they buy real maple extract? All my grocery stores sell the artificial McCormick extract. I don't have a health food store around here either. If I can't find it I think I may make the brown sugar syrup without extracts and mix it half & half with real maple syrup.~

Here is an easy "fake" one, or use real maple extract!

    1 c. water
    2 c. sugar
    2 T. brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. vanilla flavoring
    1/2 t. maple flavoring

Dump sugar and water in a sauce pan, bring boil until liquid is clear. Let cool a little and add flavoring. May be reheated on the stove or in microwave. Can be stored in jar in refrigerator. Heat in microwave just the amount you need, and its like fresh syrup every morning,

you know what, depending on where you live, you might be able to get it for free or nearly free.

near me is a park that if you go (it's usually a once a month thing) and tap the trees yourself, not only do you get a complimentary breakfast (usually pancakes!), BUT you get to take home some REAL maple syrup at less cost than any store.

I have an acquaintance who did this last year (around this time) & was able to get a 12 oz jar for about 4$ (US).

Because you're basically "volunteer labor" to do a lotta the work, they can cut costs.

Check around for that. You never know.

I usually put strawberries in sugar on mine. I'm too cheap to spring for real maple syrup and I try to avoid corn syrup, so the fake stuff is out.

That is very similar to the one I use, from Tawra Keller's "Not Just Beans" cookbook. The whole family loves it and it's just as thick as the Log Cabin I used to buy.

    Default Homemade Pancake Sryup...

I made this recipe yesterday..it's better than Mrs Butterworths imho and cost pennies to make..I doubled the recipe to fill a empty wine bottle..

    1-cup packed brown sugar
    1-cup water
    1/2-cup light corn sryup
1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring (I found this at our Super Walmart)
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In sauce pan combine the sugar, water and corn sryup..bring to a boil over medium high heat..boil for 7 minutes or until slightly thickened..Remove from stove and add maple/vanilla extract..when cooled transfer to empty container of yor choice..

I will never have to buy another bottle of sryup again..
