Cool beautiful weekend - things to do?

    So I've been thinking...
"what's near me?" you know... within an easy walking distance... something to do.

With all the high prices of EVERYthing these days... and the absolutely beautiful weather we're beginning to have - tis the season! - I've been trying to think of things to do alone or with the family.

Within walking distance of our house, let's say a 1 mile radius, is a couple parks (nothing but grass at them), a grocery and that's about it really.
with the family, we could take sports equipment, but alone, there's nothing but walking (and i dont know ANYone around here).

we dont have bikes (no storage for them ), so walking is the only mode of transport I'd have.

what ideas can you all think of around where YOU live of things to do on the weekend (or just days you have off), to enjoy??

I don't have too much advice either. My "free" time normally revolves around activities for the kids, so we do outside stuff with them.

Picnics are always fun for adults too! DH and I love taking the kids to our favorite park and after they play, we head to the river and sit on the bank and have a picnic. Then we usually bring books & DH brings his MP3 player. I read while he naps & listens to music.

Frisbee golf is really big here, one of our parks actually has a course, but from what I understand of it, you don't actually need a course to play, you can use trees and landmarks as goals.

What about other things that you did as kids that might be fun. Kite flying? We ride bikes alot, but you said you don't have storage for them...what about rollerblades? Dangerous...but fun once you get the hang of it!

Ok, that is all I can think of for now, but I'll keep thinking!

This weekend- we didn't do what we normally do... like go to the ocean or Maine to get our lobster.

    Tooooo much money.
But the speghetti was good! lol

I'm curious. Why no storage for bikes? It's pretty common for apartment dwellers to have a bike in your LR or hall.... I see it all the time. Urbanites must do that.
I see bikes stored on balconies, in car garages, against a telephone pole, anywhere and everywhere.

It's a mode of transportation. It's okay to stick out as NOT part of the decor.

Okay,... what was the question?..... oh yeah... walking distance.
My backyard was created within my walking distance to be my oasis. I have a pool, a hot tub, a garden, flower beds, grass, screen house, fire pit, patio, tables, chairs, loungers, sun, shade.
So that's were we spend all our time.

But before all that... when I was in my own little apartment.. like... 20 freakin years ago- I would walk to the library. They had music once a week, story-telling, arts and crafts, and well LOTS AND LOTS of books to read. What a great find.

well as for the bikes, i dont wanna store them outside anywhere because there are some "people" who go around and steal parts of bikes if not the whole bike (if not chained up).
this happened a couple yrs ago to kiddo's bike... no seat no front tire. and it keeps happening to those who keep their bikes outside.

as for in the hallway LOL we got in trouble for having our doormat "not precisely" in front of the door! (i'm guessing the maint. lady was PMS'ing that day!)
And kiddo kept his bike, his scooter, his skates and other things, at different times (so only one thing in the hall at a time) and we got in trouble for that - cuz the cleaning ppl dont wanna move stuff to sweep.

and storage IN the house? like where?? LOL
we have NO storage space whatsoever... not even for those cool racks you hang from the wall/ceiling, there's just no place.

otherwise, you got me thinking outside the box and I want to thank everyone for their input... there's always gotta be something I dont know about that exists...
and I'm thinking of starting an exploration challenge for myself!

    thanks!

We have a thriving downtown that's within walking distance, so there's always plenty to do. There are cafes and bars with live music, casual and fine dining restaurants, a movie theatre, stores, ice cream places, bars, etc. I'm so lucky to live where I do!

we live out in the country, so there isn't much within walking distance. We could walk around the high school track, hike in the woods, or possible go to the neighbor's pond to fish. That's about it.

How old are your children? Can you do some sort of walking scavenger hunt with them using a picture graph?

I just love taking a blanket, picnic lunch and book to the park. You could also take a frisbee, bat/ball etc...or even board games.

Same here. There is nothing to suggest because we also live in the country that is why I guess we have so many 'toys' at home for everyone to enjoy so we don't have to drive miles to find entertainment. All I could suggest is plan a picnic in your backyard or camp out in your backyard under the stars.

There is nothing within walking distance of our house except other houses. Our neighborhood expands about 3 square miles and we are in the dead center of it.

All of our activities are centered around the kids' sports - baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. Just about everyday we drive up to the ball field so the kids can hit and throw or over to the basketball courts or volleyball court for them to practice.

We have a pool and they spend a good bit of their free time at home in there from about March until October.

Croquet is fun. Sets are not very expensive and small enough to store in a closet. My kids love to volley the volleyball back and forth - no net needed for that, just a ball. A sketch pad, some colored pencils (or water colors)and a blanket in the park makes for a relaxing afternoon of just sketching the scenery. My 15 year old can spend hours drawing. Fill some water balloons and have a war. Or water gun fights are fun, too.
