Default Are we becoming wimps?

Heard they let some schools out early because of temps yesterday. When I went to school we were never sent home because it was too hot. No air conditioner there either, you just got on with life.
Every weather cast no matter what the time of year is storm team update, or your storm headquarters etc. Schools seem to close way before a winter storm is really here & it often amounts to nothing.
It's not just the weather...
Is it because we are such a litigious society? Or we just can't hack being inconvenienced or uncomfortable? Just seems to me we were tougher and stronger and more self reliant etc. back in the old days.

Just wondering your thoughts.

My thoughts are quite random, so I'll just list them...

There are a lot more people in the population now that there were "back in the day". Classrooms have more students now than they did back then. More bodies = more heat produced = hotter temps in the classrooms.

Schools are also bigger now, making it harder to cool with just opening windows/doors. I hear my girls complain every day...neither of their big huge schools have a/c and one was just built a few years ago. You'd have thought they would have put some kind of cooling system in.

And on the subject of opening windows/doors...schools are set up more and more like prisons these days. Windows and doors are kept locked and access is only granted by a security person looking through a security camera at who's out there. There's only one school in this area that has that and it's k-4, I don't know why it's like that or why it's the only one, but it is. And it's the only three story school building we have too. I can't imagine how hot the top floor gets...

Back in the day, weather prediction/forecasts weren't as advanced as they are now. We just didn't know as far ahead when a storm was coming like we do now. Now we are able to track storms not only across the country, but across the world. You can read about the same storm as it makes it's way across the globe on the weather channel lol.

I also think it's because we are a lazy, always-looking-for-the-shortcut, give it to me now, mine mine mine, society. And heck yeah this society is litigious.

Darlene, I am the same age as you and I remember the day's when we went to school no matter what the temp outdoors! We never cancelled recess either. And you never had air conditioning in the classroom. We did not have all of the busing that they have now either. I had to walk a mile to school and home. I think that we were much tougher back in our day. gheez........don't want to make us sound old here either

I agree that we are wimping big time. I was talking to a guy the other day and they told me they had cancelled a track meet due to the wind.....the wind!?! I mean it was NOT even really windy that day. I couldn't believe it We used to run track in 100 mph winds, with ice crystals blowing sideways, just about putting out your eyes. Unbelievable.....cancelled due to wind. I just thought oh yeah it would be awful to have to mess up your hair to run in.....

Not always true. I went to a Catholic school builit in 1910 (this was in the 1980's) and I don't think there were any more students, in fact, there were probably less as there was a move towards public schools.

We had school cancelled because of the cold once, and about a bazillion times for snow and/or freezing rain. But we were mostly all bussed.

The school here that my daughter goes to now has apparently not cancelled school in 14 years. There are kids graduating high school this month who have never had an unexpected day off.

I don't know if I'd call it wimping out...

The truth is back in the day fewer people had/used AC, so whether you were at school or home it pretty much felt the same. If it's blistering hot at school and a kid is used to AC, then it's going to feel pretty crappy.

Besides, when it's that hot, how focused is the kid going to be on learning? It's not any fault of their own, anyone would have trouble concentrating in high heat. I remember it getting so hot at home when I was a kid that the only way to deal with it in mid-afternoon would be to lounge around in the shade.

On an unrelated note, I really wish I lived somewhere where I had this problem.

In SC we don't see much snow. When I was a senior we heard that there was a chance of snow coming our way before school was scheduled to let out (2pm) Teenagers aren't used to driving in all kinds of weather. Parents were calling the school to find out when they were going to let us out. We had a new principal that year. He was from the north and flurries were no big deal to him. Due to parents coming to school and signing the kids out in the lower grades, he decided to let us leave early. As I recall, we did get snow that actually stayed on the ground and didn't melt. But we also had school the next day.
