Write a note. Plain paper, nothing fancy. Call up the best advice you received when you graduated and tell him that in your note, and add your congrats and best wishes for his future. Short and sweet.

Sometimes the best gifts are those that are the hardest gifts to give (but the least damaging to our wallets) ... words and thoughts from our hearts committed to paper. It always fits, it won't be sent back to the store, it won't show up on your credit card, and it will likely be the only gift he will remember in years to come.

    Cheers!

I think Buttered Popcorn is right. Just a small note or poem would be fine and going early to help is a really good idea too. Don't stress out about no bring anything and don't feel awkward either. You wont be the only one not bring a gift. Have fun.

I thinking showing up to help or staying after to clean up is a FANTASTIC idea. You can bet that long after the money has been spent and who brought what has been forgotten, you'll be remembered for your kind guesture and any memories that you make during the process!
    Have fun!!
