Default Need a frugal gift idea for a 5 yo girl

DS has been invited to a birthday party for a little girl in his preschool class. I just adore these parents and they aren't materialistic people at all.

I'd love to give her something special, but not break the bank. I only have boys, so I don't know anything about how to shop for a little girl....HELP!

    TIA!

Whatever you do, don't get her anything Bratz related. I really can't believe how many people give my kid Bratz stuff considering how they stir up the controversy.

I really can't think of anything off the top of my head... Maybe a webkinz? They also have the little Webkinz that are like 5-8 bucks each. My girls also like the Bella Sara cards.

Claire's in the mall normally has a lot of cutesy little things for girls.

I'm really not very good at picking out presents, can you tell?

Bella Sara????? Oh man, I'm so out of the loop - I'm up to my elbows in Ninja Turtles, Thomas the Tank Engine and Power Rangers.....

I like the Webkinz idea, though.

Bella Sara is a lot like Webkinz, only instead of buying stuffed animals you buy cards... like pokemon. Each card comes with a little code that you enter into the website and you get a horse to care for on their website.

Of course, that's a really small thing size-wise. They're cute, but you know how kids are at that age... when it comes to presents, size matters.

I really don't remember how much they are, I only remember thinking they were too damn expensive.

My daughter who is 6 is crazy about her Webkinz. I have to pull her away from the computer she gets so sucked in.
A giftcard from Claire's is also a great idea Put $10-$15 on one and she'll be in there at least an hour looking.

For the girls i usually go with arts and crafts supplies. You can throw together a really nice gift pretty frugally by filling a tote with stuff- pom poms, sequins, glitter, paper, glue, fancy scissors, etc. or pick up a craft kit for sand art or something that looks fun. Beads might be cool.
My ds used to pick Barbies for the girls, but then we ran into the Bratz thing, and I've also noticed girls can be pretty particular with their collections, just like boys, some do the pets, others do the barbies, and others don't want any part of dolls.
Another great idea is a board game, something your ds enjoys that he could get for her. Most kids love games.

    Webkinz are a great idea.
I also so great stuffed dogs..fluffy..big cute for $4.99 at Target last week. We bought one for a birthday party that my daughter was going to and added a $5.00 gift card. The birthday girl loved it and it cost me only 10.00.... even the stuffed animal would have been fine.

Anything dress-up related. One gift we used to give when my girls were that age was a selection of those little plastic dress-up shoes in a nice container. You can get a variety of shoes from the dollar store and a nice hatbox from the craft store. Cradle each pair of shoes in tissue paper and display them in the hatbox. Great gift for under $10.

Tiaras and princessy things are also good. We also like craft supplies.

You could do a little princess for a day basket...you can get a tiara and dress up shoes at target fairly cheap. Add the stuff for her to make her own little wand/scepter and she would have a blast!

Thank You all so much! You've given me lots of ideas to think about.

I like those Sara....(something or other) cards because her family raises horses (parents are both veterinarians).

But she's also such a girly girl that a dress up basket sounds fun.

I'll have to ask DS if she liked the crafts in school of if she chose to play instead.

The party isn't until July 10, so I have some time to mull it over. I'll let you know what I find!

    Thanks again!

You could always mix the cards and the dress up thing together!! You could get her some horse type dress up stuff, hat, boots, etc. and put them in a basket with the Bella Sara cards.

My 10 year old step daughter loves crafty things, she always has. For her birthday last year we bought her a tye-dye kit and some plain white t-shirts!! She loved it, plus she can always find stuff at home to dye too, socks, other shirts, scraps of cloth (doll or barbie blankets, shoes, hats, etc). And it is something that she could do with her family!!

I also really like the board game thing, only because I think spending time with your family is so important!! Playing a board game is a great way to do that!!
