To me this is like comparing apples to baskets. The oil companies are making record profits every quarter. I'd have to check but I don't think Nestle, Kraft Foods, etc. are making record billion dollar profits per quarter. JMO.

Unfortunately we are a nation of excess and convenience. I don't like the thought of paying $22 per gallon of water. I'm not saying that in a pinch I haven't bought a bottle of water. I try my best to have a thermos or refillable bottle for my water. I fill it up at the water fountain at work. We as a nation need to change our habits. If we did maybe we would be more financially sound. I hear co-workers who complain about not being able to make ends meet, yet they go out to lunch. Doesn't make sense does it?

Your list is helpful. It will make me re-evaluate the way I do my shopping.

VEVEY, Switzerland: Nestlé, the world's largest food company, brushed off high commodity prices and the global slowdown to post a 15.8 percent rise in 2007 net profits, above forecasts, sending its shares soaring.
    http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/02/...ess/nestle.php

Profits come from markups. Markups are done by %. Gas goes up in cost, % stays same, profit goes up.

Oil companies are making about $0.40/gallon profit right now. Back when gas was $2.00/gal, they made about $0.20 per gallon. 10% at any price.

OTOH, the combined federal and state taxes, which are $ per gallon, instead of % per dollar, average at $0.40/gallon. So when gas prices were $2 per gallon, the Gov't got 20%. Now they get 10%.

I wonder, how long till the gas taxes get raised cause of the "lost money". If it weren't an election year, I wager we'd already be hearing about it.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

My car doesn't run on Snapple. I think I'll continue to complain about gas prices, thankyouverymuch.

It's interesting to look at the comparisons...but how much is an average hourly wage in those countries? What kind of public transportation is available there? There are a lot of variables...
