Grocery Cashier Rant
Let me first say that I absolutely hate conflict. I used to be so passive and would let people walk all over me ~ its something I'm working on.
Its taken me a long long time to use a big stack of coupons at the store because I didn't want to inconvenience anyone, or have anyone think that I'm "weird", etc...
I've gotten over that (thank to you guys!)
and now I'm a stockpiling fool!
Today at the grocery store they were having some amazing deals so I really stocked up (can you say 48 cans of beans, 12 boxes of crackers...etc.). Anyway, I had coupons for about 90% of what was in my cart.
At first the cashier was joking and laughing with me about how full my cart was and how great of sales they were having...then she saw my stack of coupons and the tone changed immediately. First, she took one of the coupons ($1/2) and told me that it said "one coupon per purchase" and I could only use one. I told her a purchase was an "item" and not a transaction. She knew I was right, I could tell by the look on her face, she let it go. Then she got to my free hot dog buns coupons and got upset because she had to look back through the reciept to find out how much they were.
I just stood there and waited while she did her job and I got all of my savings totalled up. Once I was finished paying I pulled the cart to the side and was putting my wallet back in my purse, getting the boys ready to go, etc...
She didn't know I was still standing right there and she held up my stack of coupons and said to another clerk "I dont' know where people get all of these, they steal them out of people's mailboxes that's where."
Now, the old me would have been embarassed, walked away and probably never would have couponed again. Instead, I walked right up to her and said "No Ma'am, I didn't steal anything. I get all of my coupons off the internet. Perfectly legal." She just looked at me and started stammering...."uh, I know you didn't, but a lot of people do."
I just smiled, turned and walked out of the store! Yay Me!
When it was all said and done, I got about $325 worth of groceries for about $137.~Jessica

Good job!!! Way to stick up for yourself..I probably would have had a couple of other choice words also.
It is so idiotic of her to act that way. It isn't like she is getting paid per customer..so she can take the time to process you in a friendly manner. Grrr.....

I know that not all cashiers are like this. But I don't understand how someone can be so rude when all you're trying to do is get the most for your money. I'm sure that as someone working in a grocery store, she buys the good deals when she sees them!

Our stores have a limit of 3 coupons of the same kind. But, I've had checkers like your rude one, but then I've also had really nice ones! At Walgreens the checker kept apologizing that it was taking so long - I said I've got plenty of time to save the money!

I wish I could send you the two young men ~ I almost called them boys, but they're not, from the grocery store I shop at during the school year. They ask if they can scan my card at the end and then do the coupons. They get a little giddy with my savings too.

I love it! I would have done the same thing. She has no right to be rude to you like that!

Congrats on the great deals and for standing up to the rude cashier. You would think the money comes out of their pocket or something!

This is terrible AND awesome! Terrible that she spoke the way she did, but AWESOME that you stuck up for yourself!!
The way I look at it is, if I were a grocery store clerk, and I came across a customer who had tons of coupons and got a great amount of savings as you did, I would be in awe and asking where they got them all!!
But I suppose that is the difference between folks with a frugal mindset and those without. I just dont get it when cashiers act funny about coupons or deals. They have to be at that register for an allotted amount of time regardless of what they are ringing up or scanning. So what does it matter to them?
I think you did a great job with your coupons, and an especially wonderful job of sticking up for yourself! You may have been nervous or panicked about it (I would have been shaking from adrenaline afterwards, not big on confrontation either) but you did it! And I bet it felt good!

Good for you for defending yourself
. That checker had an incredible amount of gall to say something like that. I think that I would have demanded a manager be called right then and that she be reprimanded in your presence. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior. She needs a lesson in customer service and courtesy or a new job.

She definitely deserved to get a talking to. I'm glad you didn't just walk away.
That'll teach her, right?

Oh yeah...huge adrenaline rush afterwards! I was shaking most of the way home. Couldn't wait to call DH and tell him about it ~ but he was in teh middle of a flight, had to leave a message. Can't wait to talk to him, he'll be so proud of me! (for the savings and for saying something to her.
I thought about calling the store, but I've had this cashier so many times before and she is usually very very nice and customer friendly (but I've never had her with a big stack of coupons...this was the first time. True colors?)I think that I would have demanded a manager be called right then and that she be reprimanded in your presence. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior. She needs a lesson in customer service and courtesy or a new job.~Jessica
