D@mn You National City Bank!!!!!
Look at this and tell me what you think! How is this fair! (you have to start from the bottom, this is taken right off of nationalcity.com)
As you can see (I know it's hard to read) we made a deposit of $300.00, that then took us to over $800 in our account.Posted Items

06/30/2008 DEPOSIT Credit $300.00 $805.39
Our rent check of $525 cleared, thus taking us to $280 and change.
Then, there were 5 transactions pending. They all went through, they were only about $50 dollars. Thus leaving about $230 dollars. Well, the bank charged us 6 fees of $30 each, thus taking $180 from our account. AND FOR NO D@MN REASON!!!!!! The money was in our account.
We have been on the phone all day trying to get this fixed. They did refund two fees, but won't do the other 4.
They took this money for no reason, the freakin money was in the bank! Why are they taking my money.
Is there anything we can do? The lady at the local branch hung up on us when I told her she was acting like a B!TCH. I didn't call her one, I told her she was acting like one, so she hung up on us.
We then called the main number, but we couldn't talk to a manager. They would call us back in 48 hours. What kind of bull crap is this. I am sooooooooo pissed. This is my $120.00

Many banks have it set up nowadays where they process withdrawals before they process deposits on the same day. It appears that what National City does.
Debt is a four letter word!

I just thought of something this morning!
Look at the order of the overdraft transactions. The first one that went through was the highest, then it went to the second highest and so on . . .
Tell me it's just a coincidence that the highest went through first, all the way down to the lowest. If the first two or three of the lowest went through first, we would have only have 3 more overdraft charges. Then with them refunding two, we would have only had one left.
This really pisses me off. They put the highest through first, then the smallest.
Now I'm even more ticked!!!!

Chase bank has done this to us before. It totally sucks!
I have noticed now though that our bank posts the deposit first then the debits.
Sorry for you. Keep trying to get your money back. Maybe you and hubby should go to the bank, it is EASY for them to not give you your money over the phone, but a little harded in person!

Looking at the balances, they processed the deposit but still had the fees which were processed immediately after your rent. Did the debits actually bounce the day before and the fees were just taken out after you made your deposit? That's what it looks like to me.
I would request an explanation and audit of my account in writing. This should be done asap and can be done via email. My online banking has a "request assistance" link where I can ask for explanations or have things reviewed. My bank has made errors that I've caught online and they've corrected them after investigating.
Keep your cool. You aren't going to get anywhere when you are upset and telling people who could help you that they are acting like a bitch... I'd have hung up on you too. You weren't being rational at that point. I know this is upsetting, maddening in fact, but if you want to resolve it and understand what happened, you are going to have to calm down, listen to them and work together to resolve this.

A) That sucks. I've had this happen to me before, and to people I know.
B) Yes, banks process withdrawals before deposits, from largest to smallest. They do this deliberately to maximize fees.
C) You might get more back if you go in and tell them either refund the fees or close the account.
Question: Was your $300 deposit cash, or check?
Now - while you fight this - here is one simple rule to NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN.
SWEAR NEVER AGAIN TO WRITE ANYMORE CHECKS WHEN THE MONEY ISN'T THERE! No more float! Banking laws have changed and floating checks will bite you a lot more often - often enough to treat it like every time. Next month when the rent is due, make the deposit, then write the check.
I know you thought you had it under control - the bank wants you to think that. To beat them at their game you must, Must, ***MUST*** deposit before writing a check. And you're better off letting the deposit clear before you write the check.
If that means the rent check gets to the landlord on the 3rd instead of the 1st, so be it. The over draft fees of $120 on 4 transactions that the bank may never give back is a lot more than a late payment on your rent, I'll wager.
Like I said, this really SUCKS - and you have every right to be outraged. I just want you to understand, you do have the power to prevent this from EVER happening to you again. If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

If you made the purchases with your debit before you made the deposit, it would be considered an overdraft. As soon as you use your debit,(literally 2nds later) it posts to your account, so if on June 30th you used your debit card at the Country Fair and you didn't have enough Money to cover it in your account it will be considered an overdraft, then when you go into the bank to make the deposit afterwards, it is an overdraft. I am assuming the deposit was after the debit was used even if it was on the same day. I think that is the way I understanding your account and the happenings of June 30th. If it is the case, you would be considered overdrawn.

Does your bank have a cut-off time? The bank I work for has a cut-off time of 4 p.m. Anything deposited after 4 p.m. is considered the next business day and isn't posted until the next day.
Additionally, the reason the highest amount transaction goes through first is because in the event of overdraft, it makes sure the bigger checks (which are usually more important, like mortgage/rent) get paid first. Would you rather them return your rent/mortgage check and then pay 5 little transactions? The bank's process for how it handles od/nsf transactions and how it processes deposits are all in the signature cards/disclosures that you get when you first open the account.
And in all fairness to the teller, I would have told you I was ending the phone call the minute you used profanity. The minute customers get obscene with me or my staff, we terminate their call and close the account, and mail them a check for the balance. We don't get paid enough to deal with that crap.McD

Nichole is right - you're upset and rightfully so, but you have to keep the call professional, business like and unemotional. The tellers didn't set the rules, and they're just trying to earn a living like you and me. You get rude with them, no matter how angry you are, and they will band against you. I've seen this happen in customer service teams here. One nasty person calls, the CS has a rough call, then 2 minutes later, EVERYONE on teh floor know who called and was a )@(#*$ so the next time they call in, the whole floor is biased against them.

On a side note, I noticed your debit transactions were pretty small. Consider putting up the debit card and taking out a cash allowance from paycheck to paycheck. If you don't have the cash... you don't reach for the debit card. It stays home and only comes out for emergencies, etc. It's very easy to lose track of debit card purchases.

Review your bank's policies.
- when is the cut-off?
- how long might checks be held before being credited?
- what are debit card policies?
I've fired a couple of banks because they had horrible policies that made life difficult. Banks are very competitive, maybe check what other banks are doing on the same policies and move your account.
My current bank of choice has same day banking until 7 pm. I'm happy.
