I don't agree with people smoking around children but I don't agree with any laws of this nature. People ought to use common sense, last thing we need is more laws for parents to obey as they try to raise THEIR children so I'm glad it's yall and not us in the states.

Is it any safer to try lighting a cigarette while driving than it is to talk on a phone? I actually think (even though I'd hate it) that they ought to have a law that says the driver should only be DRIVING while driving - no cigs, no phones, no eating/drinking, no primping, etc. That said, until the recent problems with my left hand, I pretty much was attached at the hip (hand actually) to a diet coke. Realistically, though, it would not kill me to have to pull over and stop to drink something when I am thirsty and I think the tendency to build habits of not paying attention to the road is the root of the problem. I am actually a more attentive driver now that I can't drive with my left hand and so have to do so with my right hand - thus disabling me from various distractions.

Well said. It is my job to parent my child and there are always going to be people that don't agree with how you do that job. I know this is protectiing the kids, but there are a ton of laws that could be passed that would fit under that umbrella. Maybe the government should make it illegal to feed your kids potato chips and let them sit on their bums all day playing video games. Obesity is a greater health risk than second hand smoke.
BTW, I don't smoke, I just disagree with laws of this nature.DJ

I agree with this line of thinking too. What's next, laws to prevent kids from using computers without "kid safe" software or making it illegal for kids to drink coffee?
I think that people should have common sense. I know that a lot of people don't. But I don't like my rights being infringed upon because someone else doesn't have the common sense to do what's right!Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

I think this is a great law. I'm not a smoker nor am I an anti smoker.
But children do not know the difference between clean air and second hand smoke, nor the damaging effects. We all see the risk factors of a child eating too much junk food vs healthy food and not being active enough. Use of a computer for long periods of time can lead to carpel tunnel syndrome. Wearing a seatbelt saves lives. There are numerous obvious examples out there, that we all assume can be prevented with common sense. I guess smoking was deemed not as obvious as those other health risks.
Maybe this law is to help those 'others' who just aren't thinking and using their common sense. I like how this law applies to anyone smoking in the car with 'minors'. It could be an older sibling driving the younger one to a friend's for a playdate. Any adult caught smoking with a minor in the car gets charged - it doesn't specifically state 'parent' does it? So is it really a law against parents as everyone assumes it is?
I believe this law just came into effect in Ontario? (maybe just the Toronto area?)2012: The Year Of The Purge!
