Default Since there's talk of new laws..here's my fave:

No smoking with anyone under the age of 19 in the vehicle.

    http://www.gov.ns.ca/news/details.asp?id=20080320006

Unless you enjoy parting with $394.50 each time you're caught.

That's right..it's now the law that you can't smoke with kid sin the car. And I LOVE it. There's nothing worse than seeing some person driving down the road with babies or kids in the car puffing away on a cigarette thinking that if the wondow is down, or they thow it instead of using the ashtray, then it's ok.

I'm so proud to live in such a progressive place.

That is a GREAT law! It burns me when I see people smoking with their children in the car. Have they NOT heard about the dangers of secondhand smoke?

I think it is just another example of how people are relying on the government to do the parenting for them. It should be common sense (not to smoke around your children-especially in a car) but why should anyone bother to parent-the government will do it for you. Very dangerous in my opinion.

It's a law to protect children. Not killing people is also common sense, but we have laws to stop people from doing that in order to protect other people. I'm not willing to sacrifice the safety and health of a child in order to not have another law.

~Actually, we have laws to punish people for that, not stop them from doing it. I don't like government parenting. When people start telling other people(which is what Government IS) what is and isn't safe or right or wrong to do with their own children, it is troubling. Personally I love the no smoking in the car with your kids law but I can see how this type of law can be very infringing on parental rights.~

    Good point.

However, I still think it's a good law, because it protects kids.

I don't believe parents have a right to harm their children, Adults do not have a right to harm each other, animals, property, etc. Why do they have a right to hurt their kids?? Do we not value children as humans with rights? I'm more interesting in anti-spanking laws myself, and I know I'll get alot of flack here, but hitting is hitting, and that word "spanking" makes it sound like something else, but it is not.
Unfortunately, kids need laws to protect them because not all adults will do it just because it's safer for their kids (other peoples kids).
Car seats are a big example of this. I know sooo many parents who disregard car seats and seat belts, they will say the law is not enforced anyway unless you get pulled over for something else. My child and any child in my vehicle is in a proper restraint. Who knows when someone else could run into me? Not worth the risk.

But the unfortunate reality is that there are many many MANY people out there lacking common sense, ...especially when you consider that if they had common sense, they would have quit smoking anyway. And don't flame me about smoking..lol..I smoked a pack a day for 7 years in my late teens and early 20's..so I get it.

One of the candidates running for President smokes and has children-does that mean that he lacks common sense?

I think it is a great law. However I do not understand how government can say hydrogenated oil is bad for us and it should be banned however cigarettes can be sold and we know the health problems it causes. It just makes you wonder since both are not any good for you. Also makes me think those cigarette companies must have a lot of clout!!! ps: ex-smoker here

I think it's a great law. When I worked as a waitress in my teens, I was always deeply disturbed when I saw parents come in with their children and sit in the smoking section, with them and everyone around them just puffing away. And I smoke.

I think its good...except it should be anyone under 18 the law is you can buy tobacco products at 18 year old. Unless they are planning on changing that as well.
