a little frustrated
i want to adopt a turtle or tortise. now youthink that would be easy, and maybe it is if you know what you are doing.lol i have tried pet stores, but the ones i have found have a "fungus" on their necks. tried craigslist, tried the animal shelters, went driving down country roads for hours. i can't find a rescue in nebraska let alone the omaha area. anyone else have any ideas?

No where you can go and "hunt" turtles? We have a lake here near us that is notorious for having tons of turtles. You have to sit a while and wait for one, but then they are fairly easy to catch.
Otherwise, I'd have no idea. I'm always leary of pet stores too. You just never know where they have been and what kinds of things they have wrong with them.

I agree on the pet store turtles. My mom bought one for my son and within 2 weeks the poor thing was dead. Of course my son was beside himself. Turns out they sold us a diseased turtle.
Hope you find one soon.

We have 2 turtles that we got from freecycle. I'm not sure if you have freecycle where you live or not but people offer stuff or asks for thing they need and our 2 turtles were offered and we happened to be the lucky people who got them. Maybe try this.

Do you have any pet stores that specialize in reptiles? It is also hard to find a vet that works with them.
We just "adopted out" our 10 year old red eared slider she's a big girl and we got too busy to constantly clean her tank. She was a pet store turtle.

rehabbing them is a very cool idea. If you decide to go ahead with it, just make sure of what you do or don't need for permits etc. Animal welfare may require a bunch of stuff along with you needing to be linked up with a vet that specializes in reptiles.
Good luck in your search and with your goals.

I had a turtle when I was little, he was cute! In the past, though, I've heard that stores don't sell them because they carry salmonella... don't know if that is still the case, though.

We took care of 4 rescued from the road during one summer.. we made an outside enclosure. Plex glass on one side for the kids to watch them. made them a small pond and feed them the veggies I would have left over.. They loved the strawberry caps. They lived with us for a year. They hibernated in October and came out in April. It was a really cool experience.. and then the neighbor dogs came and carried them away, praying they got loose. I really enjoyed them in the natural enclosure.. they seemed much cleaner and a lower maintence... good luck.. we really enjoyed ours

i got my turtle!!! yippee! from craigslist. she is a 7 month old red eared slider. her name is maggie, and she is great, she was already eatting last night. we sat her up an outside kiddie pool for her sunlight , and brought her in last night, so no critters could get her. we will feed her in the pool as that will be easier to dump then the tank.
can i ask what you used for the other sides of you enclosure? i am thinking about using the plexiglass for mine also. then using the pool as the pond.
i also have sent for the application form to become a rehaber.
