Converting VHS to DVD?
Does anybody know how I would go about converting VHS movies to DVD? Can this be done? I have a VHS tape of our wedding and some movies I'd like to change to DVD. Thanks for any advice!

It can definitely be done, but the processes might vary in difficulty and price.
You'd need a DVD burner. These are pretty inexpensive now for computers (can get a decent one for $20-some), but then you have to feed the VCR into the computer (which is also possible).
They do make stand-alone DVD burners for the TV. Then you could just have the VCR run through the DVD burner and copy them directly.
And when in doubt, there's always Google: [ame="http://www.google.com/search?q=convert+vhs+to+dvd&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US

We just had paid to have our wedding VHS converted. It cost $20 at a computer store. Kinda pricey, but worth it. I'm going to have to look into those instructions, as we do have a burner.

We bought a dvd /vcr recorder/player from either Wal-Mart or Best Buy and transfered of our vhs tapes to dvds. We bought it December of 2006 and it was in the $250 range. It is really easy to do and takes very little time.

Neely, what is the name of the recorder you bought? Are all dvd/vcr/recorder/players capable of the conversion or do you think I need to look for something special?

I bought an JVC dvd/vcr recorder/player almost 2 years ago from Amazon. Love it....I can convert all my vcr tapes to dvd plus I've been recording everything from my video camera on DVD as well. Plus I can always play a vcr tape if I haven't gotten around to recording it on DVD yet. It also dubs from VCR to DVD and DVD to VCR. Well worth it if you have alot of tapes you want to record.

We bought a DVD burner/ VHS player at Walmart last Christmas - I burned all the kids old dance recital videos and home movies to DVD for their Christmas gifts.

The front of it says SV2000. I assume that is the name of it. I am not an electronics person by any means.
DH is the one who went out and bought it. I specifically told him I wanted something to transfer my family VHS movies to DVD and that is what he came back with.
I am not sure if they are capable of converting or not.
Wish I could be more help.DD (19)

It's a Magnavox (sorry, but that's the best I can tell you right now - I can't get down on the floor to read any thing further).
I know we spent less than $150 for it.

$240 back in Jan. 2007. My particular model didn't get very good reviews although I haven't had any troubles with it (knock on wood) other than it not liking certain dvd-r's. I think that JVC no longer makes this model...a comparable (or better)model would be JVC DRMV100B 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder VCR Combo with Built In Tuner...around $250.00...it seems to get good reviews.
Good Luck!

Yup yup! This is what we did... Got a Panasonic about 3 or 4 years ago...it's still running strong. And we transfered a TON of VHS's to DVD! I even earned a little extra money transferring VHS to DVD for friends and family. It's real easy to learn (comes with a manual) and does a nice job transferring. It's what we use for our main DVD player so gets quite a bit of use (we don't have cable, just watch DVDs and the occasional VHS checked out from the library).
If you're wanting to transfer old home movies or whatever it's great. We even hooked our camcorder up to it (connections in the front) and transferred ALL our "home movies" (trips, etc.) to DVD!!
