Dog Problem.... Any ideas????
DH and I have this beautiful Australian Sheperd/Lab mix. We've had her for three years. The last few weeks she's be gnawing at her tall and hind quarters, its seems like she's doing it all the time. My first thought was worms but she's given a medication quarterly which is suppose to kill any that she may get plus she doesn't do the 'doggie drag'..... Thank God! Then I thought it was fleas and we gave her a bath and it didn't help. The past few days she's been going crazy. Checked her last night and she has a raw spot now about 4 inches on her tail and another on her hind side. Pulled the hair and its raw looking. Any ideas on what we can do???
Normally I would take her to the vet and have it checked out but with all the problems we're having I can't do that. (I have $15 in the checking account and that's it.... no income in sight) I hate to see her suffer. I've put Calamine, Caladryl on it but she keeps going for it.
HELP!

Aww, sounds like she might have a parasite problem or allergies. I don't know of what you can do on your own but maybe the vets can work with you. Wishing you and your sweet pooch my best. :doglick:

Could be a bacteria as well. Our dog had something similar a month ago.

Poor doggie!
This sounds like hot spots - caused by heat rash or allergies. We had a cocker-collie mix years ago that came to us from a shelter with her whole underside (belly, abdomen and legs) covered with hot spots, which she chewed at constantly, because they itched - and that made it worse, which made it itch more...it's a vicious cycle.
Some dogs are prone to allergies - ours was very allergic to airborne allergens, so it was a constant battle for her. When we got the hot spots cleared up, she took to chewing at her paw pads until they bled, because they itched too!
Call your vet and maybe take your pup in for a checkup - they can tell you what to use to help clear it up.

Sounds like hot spots to me, could be she had an allergic reaction to something, my dog had this and it was from changing his food.
Make sure the food has the Omega 3 in it, this prevents hot spots I was told by a vet.

Good point Sue. If hot spots are the cause a Benedryl may help relieve this.

I wondered about trying a benedryl on her but wasn't sure. I will call the vet and see what they'll tell me but I'm betting they'll want to see her and we don't have the money to pay the phone bill, let alone take her to the vet. I hate being in this position.
Thank you for your suggestions.

I have had this problem with my dog in the past and used Benedryl successfully. I also sponged him down twice daily with a mixture of 2 cups warm water and 2 cups apple cider vinegar. It really helped. I hope your dog gets to feeling better.

Our vet charges 5.00 for one of those collars. so they can't chew them selves, sometime this is the only thing that helps, our dogs get hot spots of the groomer, we now tell then no shampoo, and we bring our own which is oatmeal based. But it worked, and even Beau's hair grew back.

It could be skin mites, our dog had those ..there is a dip you can get for that...it could also be her anal sacks need to be poped and cleaned out, dogs will chew at there backside if they are bothering them

Got some hydrocortisone on hand? Rub that on the itchies. Just may work.

If the spots are round and have a red edge, it could be ringworms too. Its a fungal infection so creme for athletes foot will cure it.
