    Default We're moving!!

I knew that day would come that I would leave Iowa and move closer to our family in the Pacific Northwest, but I did not know that it would come so soon.
My DH accepted a job in Springfield, OR and we are now planning to move 2000 miles from Iowa to Oregon. I have moved several times in my life, but this is the most daunting. When I moved to Iowa 9 years ago, I was single and all my stuff fit into a small UHaul trailer.
Now, I am married and we have enough stuff to fill a 2 bedroom house plus 2 cars.
We thought that we would be moving at the end to August, but now my DH's new employer would like him to start August 20. That means that we need to leave here by Aug 15th. That is less than 5 weeks away and 2 of those weeks we are going to be gone. Next we are going out to Oregon to look for housing and and 3 weeks from now we are going on missions trip to Mexico. Neither of these trip can be changed.
So although I am excited about this move and new job opportunity, I am also overwhelmed and not sure where to start.
Any tips on moving 2000 miles would be greatly appreciated.
Now I am off to sort papers and start packing.
Thank you for listening and so that this is kind of long.

You sound like you are already doing great by getting all your important papers together. I would make sure you have easy access to them just in case you need them. You said you were moving closer to family. Can they give you advice on where to live (good location and schools), what utility companies to use, etc.

Congrats to your DH on his job. I hope the move goes smoothly!

Good luck on your mission trip and your move! We only moved 100 miles, but DH had to go ahead of me due to starting the new job. I stayed behind for an extra 2 weeks to finish packing and tie up loose ends.

Video tape your belongings before the moving company comes. That way if something big gets broken you have proof. Also Take all of you important papers etc and take them in the car with you. Dont let the movers pack them
Being Army we have moved alot and these two steps will save you lots of aggravation

The last time I moved pretty far, it was from Upstate NY to Calgary. It was just me, DH (when we were just dating) and oldest DS. All we did was pack up as much as we could into DH's Crown Victoria and head off. We pretty much gave away all the furniture that we had. I have a friend of mine who used a moving company recently to move from Virginia Beach to Tennessee and he had the worst experience ever. Everything in his house was broken, including the computer he had invested $2,000 into about a month before the move.

Can you send some of your stuff via mail to your relatives near where you're moving to now?

I'd go through everything and separate it into stuff you absolutely need to keep, things you can throw away, and stuff you can donate to your local clothing charity.

    Thank you for your responses.
I hadn't thought of video taping our stuff. It may be time to dig out the camera. I will probably take pictures of important items.
I do plan on taking with us important items and papers.
I am also planning on have a yard sale before we leave. We have some items that I just don't want to move. The less stuff the better. It also gives me a chance to shop thrift stores, sales, and yard sales after we move. I like to thrill of the hunt. My parents are also moving and have offered some of their unwanted items.
Unfortunately our family is a little to far away to mail things to. Even though we are moving closer, we will still be 2 to 5 hours away from most of family. That said, we may try to mail items to my DH's new boss.
Thank you for all your tips and keep them coming.

Congratulations! The Willamette valley is gorgeous, I grew up about 20 minutes outside of Springfield. Good luck on your move.
