Meat Prices...EEEEKKKK
I just got back from the once-a-month grocery shopping & I am literally afraid of going next month......the 10lb roll of hamburger that I normally buy(cheapest they have) has shot up $3(its now $18.80) since last month....hot dogs shot up .05(.73)
Dh & I decided to try other meats that are less expensive & found farmland sausage for $1.18 lb....to add salt to the wound, when we were at the register, the sausage rang up as 1.28..gggrr...good thing I caught it & saved $1(bought 10)
We have tried ground chicken for .99 lb. It was good, but dh & some of the kids swear they found some ground up bone in it...so that's off of the grocery list now *sigh*.
I noticed that alot of price tags were missing off of the shelves so it was a little difficult to compare prices...so I just went w/ the brands that I knew were usually the lowest.
I'm just thankful that most of what we bought stayed the same price since last month - but the cost of meat just about floored me.

Good. It's about people started paying through the nose for meat. It's sadly overconsumed.
The downside is the animals will be treated even worse than they already are as the meatpackers try to cut more costs.

The downside is that people who eat nothing but veggies will be paying through the nose too...everything is being affected price wise not just meat. Personally, I love a good steak with mushrooms & onions on the side.
I feel your pain as to the cost of meat...have you tried checking a meat store to compare prices? Many of the meat stores around here have way better prices than the supermarkets, because that's all they sell. Ditto on what mombottoo said about checking meat shops. We bought our hamburger meat in bulk for 99 cents a lb. at one. If it weren't for that and DH being a hunter, we would be eating a lot more beans and cornbread. I'm trying to convince him that we need to go back into the rabbit business. They are much cleaner than a chicken plus you can use the meat in everything that calls for chicken. They are also cheaper to raise than chickens.

Our family usually only eats chicken and even that has shot up atleast $2 for a family pack... it's not that bad because that pack lasts us for 2 nights of dinner when DS isn't home from college but otherwise it would last us 3-4 days....
I also 3rd checking the meat shops... dont know if any are around my area, NE PA but might be something I will check into.

We have definitely noticed the price of meat going up too. Dh is a big meat eater, and he has stopped buying steak because of the price. I have started looking at other alternatives because I would like to limit my meat comsumption.

Oh yeah, the price of meat has shot up. Luckily DH and I are not huge eaters, so we will split a steak or chicken breast or he is just as content using either in some for of stew or cassorole to stretch it out.

I know, meat is terribly expensive! I used to only buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Thats all DH and I would eat. But its so expensive now. Just one package eats almost a third of our grocery budget. So we've been learning to cope with chicken leg quarters. Definetly not our favorite but with the right recipes its ok.

Overly consumed??According to whom? I think that would depend on the individual person. Although meat costs are rising, that will not stop my family from eating it. A variety of meat in one's diet is a good thing and the rabbits that we raise in the backyard are looking pretty tasty

There are many people all over the world that are going hungry & you are gleeful about the prices??

Mombotto, I've checked the local meat markets & some are higher than the grocery store & some are the same price. Its probably the demographics - when we lived in Wis, we could always get a better deal through the meat market.

Don't let her get you down! Some people just think that the only right way is their own. High & mighty drives me nuts.
I've noticed the climbing meat prices also. Hamburger in particular has gone WAY up the past couple of months. Although I could be a vegetarian if need be, my DH could NOT, LOL, so we just suck it up and pay it. He is a deer hunter, and he would learn to butcher his own deer before he would go without meat.Mom to two great kids!

The amount of grain it takes to produce a pound of beef would feed about 50 people one meal.
According to stats released by Harvard, if the US cut meat production by 10%, we'd free up enough grain to feed 60 million people.
As you pointed out, many people are going hungry. They're going hungry while we continue to consume mass amounts of grain in the most inefficient way possible. So yes, when I see these stats, I do think it's overly consumed.

So, you would rather feed people grain that is meant to feed cattle? The type of grain that animals eat happens to be different from what humans consume.....it is not the same grade. You can quote all of the misguided stats that you want to -that doesn't make it true- besides, any stat that comes out of Harvard I find is extremely questionable.
I had innocently started this thread to share with others a little bit of news from my neck of the woods - something that we all do here. I did not ask for you to jump on me about what I and MANY of us here choose to eat. You had no right to laugh at those of us here who are experiencing some difficulties finding ways to make the food budget stretch for our families...and I know for a fact that some of my friends who are vegetarian are having just as hard of a time accomplishing this as we, who eat meat are.
This group is about supporting and uplifting others - not tearing each other down just because we are individuals who choose to think for ourselves and refuse to be a statistical mindless robot.
Enough said.

I'm saying this in my kindest, gentlest, Southern voice: Y'all need to take a chill pill and accept that everyone has different opinions and let it go at that.
