    Default Furnace question

Dh has an old acquaintance who wants to charge us about $4k for a new furnace. We have had another estimate for $2700 for just the AC condenser as we already have a coil in the furnace, it just needs to be charged. The first guy said our 18 year old furnace would not be compatible with new condensers in regards to efficiency, as well as the sizes will not match (planning for an addition so the AC would be for about 500 more sq. ft). I am not sure about this. Something about the guy just seems shady. Like I said, I know nothing about this topic. I question this on gut feeling only. Does anyone know about this? I am not opposed to paying a decent wage, I just don't want to be taken advantage of. Thanks!

I get nervous anytime we deal with freinds and family in any situation regarding money. You do not owe this person your buisness. You also do not need to feel quilty about not using him. Just tell him it is your familys policy not to mix buisness with freindships. Invite him over for a BBQ to catch up then move on with your life.

    Best advice I can give.

Ask friends and family who they use. Word of mouth from satisfied customers is the best advertisement for any business.

Get at least 3 if not 4 bids on having this done.

Make sure they have a HVAC license for your state.
Also make sure if your state requires permits are not.
Who ever does the work make sure that they pull the required permits and the inspections get done by the city inspectors.

My family use to be in the a/c and htg business we received more new customers from word of mouth then any other way.

I'd get more estimates & ask lots of questions.

Agreed - get a third or even fourth opinion.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"
