Default Would this be a stupid idea?

Go to people's houses that live close to me and ask them if they like playing cards or board games. I'm talking about people I don't even know. I live in a "safe" location but you just never know nowdays. Either that I can devote my life as being a hermit. Church is out of the question.

    I recommend trying a site like www.meetup.com

I plugged in a MI zip code, and "board games" as an interest, and it pulled up some groups.

I've used this site for scrapbooking and knitting groups in my area.

I couldnt do it, but then again Ive pretty much accepted my status as a hermit.

But if you actually Want to meet people, how about just going and introducing yourself as a neighbor, that way you can begin the relationship and decide if you ctully like the folks before you hang out with them.

I didn't see anything that I would be interested in that is close to my home. I don't like to drive so it limits to what I want to do and don't have anyone to ride with.

I agree with Megan. If I were you I would bake a pan of cookies or a pan of brownies and take one plate to each of my neighbors on either side of me. I would then take them over to them and introduce myself and invite them to come up on your porch sometime for lemonaide or ice tea. I would see how receptive they are. I would not go into their homes I would not let them into my home until you can discern if you actually want get to know them.
If they do not seem receptive then I would go across the street to my neighbors and do the same. I would also get involved in any community events/meetings. Do you have a neighborhood watch program?

I think that is a great idea! I bet your neighbors would love it. Then in the conversation you could throw in that you love board games.

How about talking some walks and just striking up conversation with those who are out? Complement their gardens, etc.
I'd probably be shocked if one of my neighbors showed up with cookies, but I think it would be cool. I spend alot of time on my porch and people wave ans such, but the only times I've really gotten to know my neighbors were at the bus stop or if we both happened to be doing yard work or our kids wanted to play together.
Let us know if you try the cookie idea. I'd love to hear how it works out.

Like others have said, I think you should start out slower...being outside alot, taking walks and making small talk with the neighbors. Then you can work up to more. People of very untrusting and I think coming off too strong may make them run the other way. Maybe even ask around and see if the block has ever had a block party or barbecue, and if not, maybe they would like to.

Are you against driving altogether, or would you be willing to drive to somewhere close?

How is your library for classes or get togethers?

I think I would make cookies or just go and intruduce yourself and connect and work up to playing cards and/or board games I don't think I would just go and ask to play cards but I would try and connect 1st and work my way up to playing cards.

Heck, Just throw a huge block party and send out flyers to your neighbors and tell them that its a BYOB. I would also put in the flyer that it would be a great way to save on gas and have some fun with those in the neighbor hood!!

Other than that, I think that the other suggestions here would be good too!!
