The Alberta Cancer Foundation to benefit from millions raised in two-day walk.
(Calgary, July 26, 2008) -Today, the Alberta Cancer Foundation announced that 1,400 participants raised over $4 million in its annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer event. This multi-day event held in Calgary and Edmonton is the largest breast cancer fundraiser in Alberta. Events in 2005, 2006 and 2007 generated net revenue of over $17 million. The fifth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Calgary is already planned for July 24-26, 2009.
After an uplifting Opening Ceremony at Roundup Centre, participants embarked on the first 30 kilometers of their walk throughout the city. Tonight, they camp at Currie Barracks as they rest up for the final 30 kilometres on Sunday. Their weekend journey ends tomorrow with an emotional Closing Ceremony at Roundup Centre at 3:30 p.m. Family, friends, and supporters are invited to greet and cheer on the Walkers as they make their way to the finish.
New to The Weekend to End Breast Cancer this year is the inaugural KidsK 2.5/5K Walk. During yesterday’s Day Zero, a group of brave kids stepped up to do their part in the fight to end breast cancer. Little heroes, aged 5 to 15, walked either 2.5 km or 5 km in the KidsK™ benefiting Alberta Cancer Foundation.
“Everyone participating this weekend is a true hero in the fight against breast cancer. Yesterday, we had 150 kids join us for our first-ever KidsK™ benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation, a 2.5km/5km walk and raise $29,000 for breast cancer research, treatment and care,” says Linda Mickelson, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “It’s great to see so many youth take such a strong initiative and make a real impact on critical research and screening programs in this province. We hope everyone will help us make next year’s event just as successful by registering now for the 2009 Weekend to End Breast Cancer.”
“The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is helping us build a world-class breast cancer research program in Alberta. Thanks to these walkers and their donors we’ve acquired specialized equipment and funds for research projects that otherwise would not be happening here,” says Frank Jirik, MD, Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health (U of C).
Weekend to End Breast Cancer funding of over $17 million over the past three years, launched the Alberta Breast Cancer Research Initiative, purchased a new mobile screening van, provided bridge funding of herceptin for more than 180 women, and sponsored a breast health education conference in Calgary.
it was an enlightening and fulfilling weekend full of a lot of tears and a lot of courage.

My mom and I are the only women out of a predominantly female family (she has 4 sisters and 6 aunts) that don't have breast cancer. so whatever I can do now to help my odds....
It is the hardest thing I've ever done, and the best. Right up there with having my daughters, and getting married.
My team is already in full swing for next year....We've already got close to $5000 raised since yesterday.

its just about 37.5 miles.
I'm still sore but my heart is not.
I have my friend Lisa who is a massage therapist coming over tonight to give me a massage. She was my secret weapon on the weekend at camp - she came and gave my cocaptain and I massages in our tent. it was great....where she massaged was the only spots NOT sore the next day.
it was just a nasty thunder and lightening storm that kept us up all night...hoping that the tent wouldn't fly away (we were 3 rows in so safe on that count) and it was hail proof. also that the fly wouldn't blow off and leave a hole in the top for the rain.

thanks.
and here I am planning on doing it all again!
every year I lay in my tent swearing that I will never do it again.
then the closing ceremonies, and I am all ramped up to do it again.
its nice that all the money we raise stays in our province for study and whatnot, but then those tests and trials done here have a ripple effect across the country and possibly into the US.
Over the past 4 years Calgary has raised $17 million dollars to go to the study of breast cancer.

Thank you!
What a wonderful and giving thing to do." May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."
