    Default Freedom writers - swearing

I just saw a film called Freedom writers, starring Hilary Swank. Anyone seen this film? Or read the book this film is about? The film is about a highschool teacher, who makes her class to write diary. They put those diaries together and then published it with a title "Freedom writers". This is a real story and actually happened in California.

Well, I searched the net to find out more about this. They have a foundation called Freedom writers foundation. I can´t believe what I found out. One teacher who made her highschool pupils read this book, was given suspension for 18 months. And the reason was, this book contains swearing.

Unbelievable! What do you think? I mean, they were highschoolers after all. And the kids wanted to read this book.

My neighbor gave me this to watch last year and I really liked the movie and like you I did a search online to find out more.
It amazes me what one teacher can do and if all did the same we would have kids that would want to learn. Some kids don't have that opportunity at home and I feel it should be on both ends that we educate our children.
It doesn't have that much swearing in it anyway so to stop a book or movie about something that could help encourage more is stupid to me.

I think that any kid that wanted to read a book should be encouraged as much as possible. I think its insane to punish a teacher for encouraging reading. I understand the reasoning, but in this case i don't agree with suspending the teacher.

I never saw the film, but I have a lot of issues with banning books. Anything that inspires children to read should be encouraged. Read it with the kids...talk about how the bad language is an unfortunate way of life for some people based on culture and where they live, but it's how they know to express themselves.

People find bad messages everywhere if they look too hard. Makes me nuts.

That's just crazy. Like someone else already posted, they've already heard it all before.

I recall having to read Gulliver's Travels in high school. When Gulliver was the giant in Lilliput, he put out the town fire by, um, relieving himself on it. No one got into trouble for that. I think this is the same thing.

In junior high we had to read Roots and I remember the teacher telling us that it had some adult stuff in it (and it did) and asked that we be mature about it. No problems there either, and this was in the deep south.

I totally agree with Amy on this....we had a parent that did not like one teacher's choice of book and wanted to ban it from the class.( I believe the book was "Speak") I respect the parent's decision to censor what her own child reads, but don't make that decision for everyone else.

BTW, my entire family really enjoyed "Freedom Writers" when we watched it. It had a very positive message and I'm glad my kids had a chance to see it.

If a parent at my child's school ever worked to get an entire book banned from the curriculum rather than just prohibiting their own child from reading the offending book, I'd sue them for inhibiting my child's education.

It probably wouldn't work, so I might have to take the second step of egging their front door.
