Wal-mart and Rollback signs
Are the rollback signs you see at Wal-mart are sale prices? I'm confused. Today, I went to Wal-mart for the 1st time in a long time because I wanted to save money on groceries. Wal-mart doesn't seem to have much stuff on sale compared to another supermarket I go to.

I am not sure about the food side of Wal mart, but I know that they have "sale" prices only once a month.. That would be the first week/weekend of each month. Roll back signs are kind of like a mark down before clearance, or when they are over stocked... I haven't worked there in a long time, but I think this is what roll backs are for.

I work for a company that sells stuff into Walmart. Sometimes we offer them a special price or they will come to us and ask us to absorb part of the discount. Rollback is just a price reduction for a limited time. Unlike a sale it is usually more than a week.

We don't have sales at Wal-Mart, very rarely do you find anything other than Rollbacks in the ads. The company decides each month what they want on Rollback, usually raise the price before they Rollback then let people think they are getting a deal. It doesn't have anything to do with clearance at all. This new slogan Save Money, Live Better really gets under my skin. Our local Aldi's is cheaper and our local grocery store has sales every week, good sales and Wal-Mart will match it but let the other stores do all the work in advertising. I just got 24 pack Pepsi for 4.99 while Wal-Mart had it for 6 something. Watch your prices closely.

So, is it best to go to Wal-mart the 1st week of the month?

Technically speaking, yes it is a sales price.
However if you search the forums for Walmart related threads you'll find posts by others who have found their Walmart will often RAISE a price, then a day or so later put up a ROLLBACK sign advertising a rate that is higher than the original price but a bit cheaper than the raised price. Very sneaky IMHO, but a lot of stores do the same thing; raise a price then put the item on 'sale' higher than the original price. It isn't limited to Wally World (though I despise Walmart for other reasons not to be mentioned here; others have posted extensively about those reasons more eloquently than I could).

There is several products that I find cheaper, always at Walmart than any place else. I make that trip there about once a month and the same with Aldi's.

"roll back pricing" = "marketing mumbo jumbo"
"Marketing mumbo jumbo" = "language used by businesses to make you think you're getting a better deal than you are and often ends up making system programming much harder for the IT guys because of all the special whoopdie doo tricks they come up with to show how you're getting such a great deal that are meaningless but take hours and hours to program"
