To me haircuts are freeing, I'm lighter, fresh start, all that stuff.
What I do is find a pic or 2 I like & bring it to my stylist. We talk about how it would wouldn't work with my hair or face etc and she goes to town. You can also ask someone who's hairstyle you admire where they got theirs done & who did it. Armed with that knowledge ask the stylist if they know the style you are talking about on so & so and go from there.
Go for it! You've made it to 40 with all kinds of challenges, your tough enough to get a new-do. DO it!

So don't go real short ~ how about mid back with long layers for some shape and body with some soft layers around the face. Very flattering!

I say implement the two week rule.

In the long hair circles, the two week rule basically states that before you make a final decision allow yourself at least two weeks before you decide.
If at the end of the two weeks you still have the desire to cut, then only take off a couple of inches, you can always take off more later, but it'll take awhile to grow it back out.

I think that we just get in ruts with ourselves and need a change.
For me, I've also found that when I'm going through other changes in my life, or am going through a stressful time, that's when I feel the need to cut the most.
Almost like I need to control something and this is something I can do easily without hurting anybody else.

    Hth you some!

Me too and I am rarely happy with the results.

I go through stages too. I let it grow and then cut it. I want it long again and let it grow again and then hate it again and cut it 'again'. Last year, I decided to cut it short and find it funny that I have actually kept it short. Usually by now I would have it growing out. I think it was the hairstylist. She highlighted it and cut it the way I wanted!! I have not regretted it at all. Only now, I cut it myself the same way she did. I haven't did any highlights to it lately, but did color it. I am planning on putting some highlights in within a few weeks before school starts back.

Good luck with your decision. I know it can be hard because you may not like your new look, but it will grow back if it isn't what you want. So if you are ready to take the plunge then I say go for it!

I agree with some other ladies here--CUT IT!!! and COLOR IT!!! I love getting my hair all cut off. I only let it grow to shoulder length and then have to chop it again! I say, cut it and buy a great pair of earrings to show off your face.

    I say go for it!!!!!!!
I couldn't imagine cutting my own hair..lol I'd never be able to layer it myself ..it'd be 6inches on one side and 10 on the other

A great cut and color can make you feel fabulous, and why not be 40 and fab

BTW...you could always get some extensions if you go shorter and hate it. I have long hair, but it's thin, and I had wicked real hair extensions (a lot of donated hair is made into extensions too) and no one knew but me. They matched my hair perfectly and gave me the added volumn I needed. I had a set of Raquel Welch, and my stylist got them at the supply store for me with her discount. Now I wear them all the time!

I went through something similar last October. I was like you with pulling it back all the time, and I always hated the way it felt on my neck. I ended up really liking it (and Dave liked it too, even though he doesn't usually like short hair) and don't regret it a bit.

Maybe you could do the in-between route? Cut only half of the amount you'd like to cut off? If you want to cut of 10", cut off only 5" at first, for example.

    Good luck
