Ugh, just venting.
We are moving out of this apartment on the 14th. We went out yesterday and found an apartment to move into. We are going from living in a one-bedroom, to what's called a 1-plus den. Basically, it has two rooms, but the second room has no closet. It's cozy and perfect for the size of our family. It's $150 more a month than we're paying now, but I think that we can handle it. I plan on not setting up a phone land line, and only getting basic cable channels. Water is included in the rent. DH's commute is cut in half, so that saves him about $20/month on gas.
My issue right now is just getting into the apartment. After we pay the deposit and rent, and my husband's lovely traffic ticket, we will be flat broke. We had to clean out our savings to even have the money. He gets paid two days later, but I am behind on a car payment and the loan payment, so those will need to be paid. I will try to put as much back into savings as I can. It's about a 5 mile drive from the current place to the new place. I told DH we should just take the seat out of the minivan and make a few trips with that, and borrow a friend's truck for the big stuff. It's so close, that I think it would be much cheaper than renting a U-haul. Plus, we have no money for a U-haul. Period.
I was up until 2am this morning laying in bed and running my brain thinking about everything. I have stuff set aside for a yard sale, but it's not much stuff and I don't know if we have time to do one anyway. I do have a 27" TV that we don't need, I was gonna put in the yard sale, but maybe I can list it on craigslist and get $40. Is that too expensive? I also need to get rid of the fridge, but it's more like a garage fridge and I probably wouldn't get more than $10 for it. I have been responding to ads on craigslist for babysitting gigs, to no avail. I turned in all our recycling, and got $10 for that. Plus I have $40 cash in my wallet. This is designated as grocery money, and will have to last us as long as it possibly can. I know that it won't be like this for long, but I don't function well under stress.
Could some money just fall out of the sky, please?
P.S. You're awesome if you actually read my whole post. I'm sorry it's long and all over the place, but I just needed to get some thoughts out of my brain.

Angela, how much do you have to move? If you think you can get it all in the minivan and a truck, that is what I would use. I would not rent a u-haul if I could avoid it. Have you checked it to storage places that rent trailors by the day (not u-hauls). There are some places around here that rent flat bed trailors with sides on them for $25 a day. I think that is fairly cheap and it will also help cut down on the amount of trips you have to make back and forth from the old place to the new place. Just an idea. Or if you know a friend with a truck and a trailor that is an even better idea. :-)
As for listing items on Craigslist, I think that is a great idea and I do not think the prices are too high. You could list it for a week and if the tv doesn't sale, then lower it by $10.
I do wish money would fall from the sky!! That would be great. Knowing my luck, I would never see it. LOL!!
Good luck with your move!!~*Michelle*~

I say keep relisting things on craigslist. Even the little things you set aside. Maybe make a post MOVING MUST GO. Good luck with that!
Is there any friends who can help you move, even with no truck, car loads will be quicker then one at a time? If you can get your friends truck, I say do that no Uhaul.
Can you donate blood? Im trying to think of a quick buck..ill get back to you if I think of more.
Good luck, it will be over with before you know it!

Thanks! I will just start listing things on craiglist. I think the video games might sell well if I just offer all ten of them for $30 or $25. I'll have to start taking pictures tonight.
As for renting a moving truck, I will see what the rates are. But we do have a good friend with a truck and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help us.
I wish I could donate blood, or even plasma! I don't think they'll take it from a pregnant person though.
I'm going to let all my friends know and see if anyone can help. The bummer is that we're moving on a Wednesday. But I do have friends that work in retail and might possibly have the day, or at least part of the day off. I think I will make some home made pizzas and lemonade for the helpers.

It sounds like a really good plan. I have done many 5 minutes away moves. Many included lots of garbage bags for clothes. Hopefully everything will work out for you. It sounds as if you have a great start to begin with.

I STRONGLY recommend you not trust U-Haul. I was all set to move, had a truck reservation I made online, had a confirmation number PRINTED OUT, showed up, and my truck wasn't there. They gave it to someone going across country, right out from under me, and didn't even apologize for it.
Go budget - they're way more reliable and local customer friendly. I think they were cheaper too...If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Good luck with your move..... we used a van and a truck when we moved once and it worked just fine. I wouldnt even take clothes off hangers! We actually used an expansion shower curtain rod in the van and hung them! Id definately try selling stuff...even the little stuff will sell on craigslist. The video games in a lot is a good idea!

I feel your pain...we just moved this past weekend...and we have vowed to never do it again! If we end up moving again I will have 10 people lined up to help us...our friend with a truck and trailer was going to help us move...canceled the night before the move which sent me into panic mode. I was however able to google promotion codes for the truck rental companies and came up with a 25% off coupon that we used so that helped a bit. Good luck with your move...I hope all goes smoothly!

Good luck with your move and try not to stress too much. (I know, easier said than done.) I think $40 for the t.v. is a good price and I'd try to get at least $20 for the fridge. Here's a magic money wand
to coax that money out of the sky for you.

Good luck on your move!
We moved 7.5 yrs ago it was not fun.
We had a 18 wheeler borrowed from dh's work and a few people from dh's work that owed him a favor.

When we moved we just used a truck and the car.. we do have a lot of stuff too.. it worked out and we saved money - we're also 30 minutes (20 miles) away from our previous home.. renting can get VERY expensive..

Ask friends with vehicles to help. Just one tiny carload full makes a world of a difference! Or if you're willing - post it on Kijiji or somewhere like that that you're looking for free help. Never know what you may get? Maybe hubby could ride with the driver and your stuff so there's no flight risk if ykwim?
OMG I soo agree with Greebo...I helped my sister move and she rented a small Uhaul. I was supposed to drive it. When we got there to pick it up - none were available. My sister booked and confirmed online, called and physically went in the night before to ensure it was there and BAM they rented it out someone prior to us by 5 minutes. GRRR! Then they offered a free upgrade to compensate.
We needed a truck regardless so we took it. The truck went from 18' approx to 40'? Regardless, IT WAS FREAKING HUGE!! I refused to drive it and called my bro in to help - he's not afraid to drive a puppy that big - till he got behind the wheel! HAHAHA. I hope the move goes smoothly for you. Posting the fridge and tv on Craigslist is a good idea too. I've not posted things for sale on there yet but others I know have and done well.
Good luck in your new home,

Debbie

Good luck on the move. We did it with friends and several pickups. 30 miles one way and it worked out fine! Your prices sound right to me on the video games, t.v., and fridge. I know that I'd buy them at those prices.

I'd move w/out the Uhaul---we've done it numerous times ourselves. We always moved with just a pickup and a car.....takes several trips but if you're packed and organized it's not that much of a big deal. I hope it all goes smoothly and that some money shows up for you (that happens quite often when we're in dire straights).
