Frugalmomof3 - question?
I knew you had mentioned you ordered the magicjack. Did you ever check it out to see if it really worked? If so, how did you like it? I recently saw them offering this product on QVC, but resisted temptation to order it. I want to hear from people I know that has this product to hear if it really works or not.
Anyone else have this product? How do you like it if you do?~*Michelle*~

Bumping this post for you, Michelle. My DS and I were talking about this last night so I'm curious, too.

Ok I have googled this product to see what it was. I am a bit confused...can someone explain to me how this works?
If you plug the phone into your computer and it dials through the phone, how do you avoid the LD charges? Will it only work with the one phone that is plugged into your computer? The advert states that you're not calling through the computer but the phone instead. This product sounds too good to be true.
I'm wondering if the cost of upping ones internet service to be able to use this product would help validate/justify getting this product?
Example:
My current internet = $420/yr. If I upped it to the min requirements for the magicjack I'm guesstimating that would be $600/yr so the difference is $180 that I'd be paying more just to be able to get the free long distance calling. Personally, I know my LD calls do not equal $180/yr or greater so this product probably isn't for me. OR Maybe I do not understand how the phone companies work down in the US....do you pay per use regardless if it is local or LD? That could mean the world of difference and justify this product (unless you make a lot of LD calls daily to keep in touch with friends and family)2012: The Year Of The Purge!

If you plug the phone into your computer and it dials through the phone, how do you avoid the LD charges? I think it's similar to vonage - but not sure. You can't use it with dialup or a satelite internet service. So, there's no way it would charge ld. Will it only work with the one phone that is plugged into your computer? Yes, i believe it will only work with the one you plug in, but I think they make cordless phones that have more than one phone? The advert states that you're not calling through the computer but the phone instead. This product sounds too good to be true. You are calling through the comp. It has to be on in order for it to work. If it hibernates or goes to sleep it will not work (this is the only part I don't like) though it does have voicemail.

I'm not sure about cost. We don't have a home phone, only cells. So we wanted to try something so that dh could go to a track phone in october when our cell contract is up. Where we are moving doesn't have the greatest cell reception anyways.

Hey there!
OK I have the magic jack and it works pretty good, I dont have any static on the line and it's clear.
What you do is plug the magic jack into your USB port on your computer then the phone line from the phone into the magic jack. It rings like a normal phone and for the price it can't be beat.
I personally love it and I am glad I got it!

Thanks for the feedback, Tracy. I was curious about it and have thought about purchasing one to lower costs even more.

They issue you a new number, I think there is an option to keep your current number but dont quote me on that. I dont mind getting a new number though.
As for costs its only $40 the first year and $20 each year thereafter so it's so much savings! Compare that to paying $40 a month

Tracy, do you have to keep your computer on at all times or will it ring if the computer is off?

It has to be on because it has to be connected to the internet, that I am pretty sure of... my computer is pretty much on all day so it's not a bad thing for me.
