Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Yeah, I saw that as well. I don't think my farm will be big enough to consider it a loss as much as a supplement to our lifestyle.

I have the same dream!~ But it will be once the kids are bigger... or moved out!(only 15 more years...lol).
Depending on where you live, our acreage was sold at less than what we bought our house for in the city. So your mortgage, or lack there of, may not be any different than in a home.
We lived on 3 acres. I tried to garden, but with 1 preschooler, a toddler and an infant, it didn't turn out plus it was all clay. So you'll want to be sure of the soil when you go looking. Bring a shovel!~~ But on that 3 acres, had the soil been better we could have had a wonderful garden! There was room for a stable or barn, a coop, and still pasture for bigger animals had we chosen that route, but we were young and really didn't know what we wanted from life. All we did was drive kids to activities and it wasn't feasible anymore, it wasn't a great community as it was. We did see another acreage that teh soil was rich, but it had a pond too close to the house that we worried about.
I will again do it. I hope to get land, and build. I'd go off grid, a cistern with water collection from rain and snow. Solar panels for power, woodburning for heat as well as solar heating and natural cooling. One day...
So an acreage doesn't have to be at a loss. Or you could consider most homes are operated at a loss too..lol. You stay there, but they don't earn you money. An acreage has potential to grow you some of your food....

Doing it at a loss is the rich people version.

You don't need a lot of room to have a hobby farm. Garden + a couple chickens = hobby farm.~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~
