The scariest thing happend to me today
I was leaving my parents house and put my son in his car seat. It was a hot day and started the engine with the air on. I accidently hit the trunk button on my key chain and my dad shut it and this is while I was buckling my son in. Didn't think much of it and shut the door and went to the drivers side to get in.
OMG, It was locked and I ran to the other side to check and was locked too. Good thing I always turn the air on first! My son was locked in and so was my purse with my cell phone that I laid in the seat.
I yelled at my mom and dad to help. Here it would not be an 'emergancy' because I had the air on. We called the police and they were there soon and so nice and got my car unlocked.
Whew, talk about tears, panic, and anxiety. The feeling of seeing my son in the car and I could not get to him was a horrible feeling.
Food for thought... Glad I always start the engine for the air/heat but make sure your hand does not hit that lock button and double check! Everything turned out fine. The cops were telling me at Toys R us the other day here how this mother just got her two kids in the car and the wind blew the door shut with over a hundred degrees in the car and they got them out safetly.
I guess that would be the down side with automatic locks. Sometimes you may not realize you hit it.

glad the police helped and the ac was on. one summer i got my finger caught in the door and couldnt get the key pad lock system on the door to unlock b/c at that time it was broken. i had to yell for my mom to get the keys and unlock the door. my finger is fine, no scars or anything. that was about 10 yrs ago, maybe longer.

That happened to me once in the summer, but the car wasn't turned on. Stupid locks are on the side of the door, not the top of the door handle, so I guess I bumped it getting out. Luckily it's a small town and the town mechanic got there within 5 minutes once he heard there was a baby in the car. I had a meltdown during and after he got my baby out.

I'm glad you had the car started.

That would be scary, so glad that the cops arrived in a timely manner and that you already had the ac on. I do the same thing with Paige. I crank the car and get the air cooling down while I get her in as well.
That is my fear, especially now that Paige knows about locks and how they work. As soon as she climbs in the car (wheather she climbs in thru the front or the back to get to her car seat, she automatically locks what ever door she goes past. I am thinking seriously about getting a magnetic key holder for the undercarriage of the car and getting a cheap copy of my key made so at least I can unlock the door with it.Last edited by KKCondrey; 08-24-2008 at 08:08 AM. That too has happen to me! I got an extra key made and it is screwed directly behind my plate (between plate and van) using the same screw that holds it on. It is easy to screw off with a coin, stick or what ever is on hand.

A rock thru the window works as well as a key. Scarry situation, but if it happens to you, don't sit their with a child/pet suffering waiting for help.

This happened to me when DS10 was about 9 months old. I put him in the car, put the groceries in and shut the door. I returned the cart to the corrall(sp?) which was about 3 spaces down and went to open the door and it was locked. I must have bumped the automatic locks before I had shut the door. I was frantic too! Someone called the cops (I didn't have a cell phone in 1999) and they came out and were able to get him out - the window was down a little.
Heh. And then when we were camping my daughter decided to push the buttons. Well dh had always kept the keys in the car when camping before so didn't think anything of it. I shut the doors not knowing he left them in there and yep the keys were locked in car. We had to have my mom drive up to us at the site, drive dh back to the house (where he had to break in thru the window... lol) and then back up the site.
So, now with having little ones, I leave a door open until I open the driver's door, or until ds10 or dh or someone is in the car who can open the door if somehow it gets locked.

I can so see how fast the panic would set in! So glad everything was ok and you had the air on.
