    Question study hall

Morning all, School is back in for everyone and I was wondering, what are study halls used for in your opinion? According to our handbook they are used to do homework but the further in the handbook it says that homework is to be done at home. I think home work is to be done at home to be more able to supervise it getting done right. But this tems from my sd doing it in study hall and every time it was wrong but if she did it at home and took her time it was right. What are your opinions

We have "think tank" at our high school where kids can go during thier study hall to get help with a certain subject. My kids do homework or just read during thier study halls.

My kids aren't old enough to have them yet. When I was in school (eons ago) I would always do my homework in them so that I wouldn't have to do it at home. However, I was a good student and my parents never had to help me with my homework. Homework may have changed since then.

My DD does her homework during study hall (last class of the day), and then I check it when she gets home and she has to then go back and redo whatever she did wrong. She tries hard in SH because she doesn't want me to see any wrong answers and with all the homework done before she gets home, she has her after school time to herself. It works well for us.

But, when she has a test, she has to study from home. I usually quiz her to make sure she knows the subject.

I think study halls can be a good thing, and more so for the kids whose parents aren't involved their childrens lives as many of us are. It seems alot of children, once the school day is done, school work in itself is done. I think that most kids either do their homework or read while there, at least there is an adult there for either help if needed (at least at our school) or someone to give a push to get the kids to do their homework.

At our home, my kids do their homework in study hall and I check the homework once home & while they go out to play (weather permitting) or do other things (they don't watch tv after school) and if I find errors then I'll call them in one at a time to either go over it with them or just to give it back and tell them good job. I can't do this every day, but we try.

The only time a student has study hall at DD's HS is if they choose it. It can be chosen as a non-credit class. Basically it is a just a room the students go an sit in for that class period everyday. There is an authority figure in the room to keep things calm and quiet. Normally the students are not allowed to talk. They either read, study or sleep.

Study hall is not a popular thing at DD's school. The majority of students will just go ahead an choose an easy elective over study hall. I can't say I blame them.

Yds has study hall. This yr it is 2nd period. There is a teacher and even assigned seating. He does his homework from first period in it. His first period class is AP U.S History and the teacher gives homework everyday including the first day of school. Yds is a good student so I dont worry much. He is ranked #10 out of 209 kids in the junior class

Here they have study halls and learning labs. Learning labs are intended for students to do their homework and be able to get help, but really they are glorified study halls.

More disturbing to me....my 16yo only gets a lunch period every other day. First day of school, no lunch period. WTF?

Our problem is that she does it instudy hall and doesn't bring it home to be checked. She justsays she doesn't have any and then test time cmes and she doesn't know what she's doing. She's smart but she's too busy being social at school. Last year it was anightmare getting her through the year. This is why we think the homework should be done at home.

Could you add another class to her schedule rather than let her have a study hall? I'd call the school and ask. If not, I'd just make her bring her homework home to be checked.

I was one of those students with little parental involvement... When I left school for the day I was done. Study halls were the only way that i would get my homework done, but at the same time there was a lot of bs that went on during it and most people just seemed to mess around.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Did you call the school and ask why?

Here study hall is detention for students not turning in work on time.

It is either over lunch hour or after school.

Was it a mistake in her schedule? I would be checking into that my kids need lunch.

When I was in high school (about 7 years ago), we used study hall to do homework, or we could get passes from the study hall teacher and go to another class and work on projects, or you could go to the computer lab and work on papers, I did this for my art projects. It wasn't a required class so many students just use to fill that time with other classes. When I hit my senior year, we had something called open campus, so we could leave during our study halls or open periods.

I think it helped me, but then again, I was a pretty good student and never really had any problems getting my work done in class.

In our school, we've just started a quasi-study hall. It is used to allow students the time to go see teachers and ask questions that they may have come up with while doing their homework. Yes, there will also be students who will use that time to do homework, and I have no issues with that. They are getting the work done, I don't really care where they do it. Also, some of our kids have no place to do homework and no one to care if they are doing it. Getting it done in study hall means that someone intelligent can oversee and help with it.
