I too am finding that the prices are putting food out of reach for us. We can go weeks at a time with no money to put into groceries and then have maybe $20.00 to spend and I'll find myself in the market thinking now what??? What do you buy with $20??? Thank God we have had a really bumper crop in the garden this year. Always peppers, tomatoes, green beans, onions, swiss chard and very soon some apples to eat. I end up buying the staples, flour, sugar, corn meal, dried beans, salt, oil. So we have been eating corn bread, biscuits, bread, fried corn meal mush, fry bread with beans, pear cobblers, vegetable soups, tomato soup, wacky cake, pancakes, etc.
We also have had an angel here on Earth buy us a regular box and a produce box from Angel Food Ministries for the past 2 months. And every once in awhile a bag of food or other things an unknown angel has dropped off on our doorstep. Things have been rough but God has seen us through. I know we are not the only ones out there seeing hard times right now. We feel very blessed to have food on the table every single meal. We know there are those going hungry.
But I too am astonished at how much and how fast prices have risen. I just don't know how most Americans are making it. I wonder what will happen come Christmas, if the stores will be able to turn a profit or not.

I really admire you ladies who grow your own food and then feed your families from it.
My yard is a slope--all of it.

This is why I can't wait to have our own garden next year. I have just been scouring the store ads and stocking up on sale plus coupon items. Our local store just had frozen veggies on sale for 1.00 a bag. I thought that was pretty good.

I have noticed the prices are going up and the packaging is getting smaller. I wanted some peanut butter and saw the price was $4 for a jar of Jiff and some other brand. I almost fell out. That peanut butter stayed right in the store. I ended up getting it elsewhere for $2.

It's horrible isn't it? I don't know how the average family is supposed to keep going! Every single time I go the store our staple items have gone up! I was in Kmart today and saw a 12 pack of Coke was 5.19! WOW!
I've been trying to stock up on beans, pasta, etc. It's filling and can be stretched a long way! But I also have to have some fresh produce. My family likes most of it's veggies raw and it's getting harder and harder to find them at a decent price. We did get alot of cucumbers and squash out of the garden this year but they are about gone now. And I have tomatoes now, but they won't last long!S

Over the weekend I paid .89 for a can of tuna on sale! It was at the more expensive grocery store, but since I'm not feeling well & it was much closer, I got one. I so need to get more organized with the shopping list & buy extra at the cheapest store. Its really tough since the prices change so much to know what a good price is anymore. Its quite a shock to walk through & just look at prices, much less actually get most of what you need.

I went shopping this weekend and ended up spending a vast majority of the budgeted amount on the stockpile. I started getting stuff for winter because knowing how it's been lately, I figured it would be smart to get the stuff now. I ended up with 24 cup of noodles for $12, 24 ramen noodle packs for $4.44, etc. I was shocked to see Coke Zero in the 12-pack fridge boxes for $3.97! I wouldn't have bought so much stuff but they had a deal where if you spent $225, you get a $30 box of chicken for free and this is the really goooooood chicken.
I had talked to DH and my inlaws and apparently, it's way cheaper to buy the meat already cut up instead of buying it and having someone else cut it for us.
I watched The Mom Show today and they had a segment about spending less at the grocery store. She mentioned some really great things, like when you buy bleach to watch for the percentage of concentration of bleach in the container if they're the same size, etc. It was also stuff about buying things based on how much each item would be in the package if they sold separately. This goes for stuff like toilet paper, etc.
I figure if the prices aren't going down any time soon, then I would simply get the stuff I need on sale and then use my stockpile to get the stuff I need that's gone up in price. I never buy anything separate when there's a Club Pack alternative nearby. For example, they were selling Club Packs of pudding for $3.48. That was for 16 cups. If I had bought it separate in the 4-cup box, I'd have paid an extra $0.50!
I figure the best way to beat the rising prices is to a) keep stockpiling, b) keep making meals out of my stockpile and c) use the stockpile cash on items that I need when I'm done buying the other stuff that's on sale.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

If I pick up one more shrunken package I will scream!! Are there really people who don't notice? I've put the kids on rations of a sort. One glass of milk with a meal, cheese is for cooking not snacking and for right now veggies and fruit are what's in season.
