Spices Prices
I almost fainted yesterday from sticker shock
I needed ground cloves and other spices.
for a small .09oz ground cloves they wanted $8.79..
.06 oz allspice $4.79
they are still on their shelves.
I had some whole cloves and came home and ground them.
Will go to the health store and BJ's and get my spices now.Last edited by Holly; 09-08-2008 at 03:29 PM.

I was in the 99 cent store yesterday and noticed they had a large seletion of spices. I will be checking more carefully when I need some.

Could you host a friend and family spice share? Buy bulk and refresh everyone's spice cabinet for a share in the cost. I know the whole cloves I have from BJ's have been on my shelf/freezer for about 5-7 years. Thank goodness they are whole. As soon as I grind them they smell wonderful.

If you have Price-Rite or Big Lots near you, you might look there for spices. That's where I buy mine, the prices at the regular grocery store are insane!
Lemon Extract was $7.99 at the regular grocery and Price-Rite had the same size for $1.99.

Here's a little hint... when it comes to dried herbs... they're all about the same.
with that in mind... the dollar store variety may be older than the cheap "no name" brand at your regular grocer!!!
Otherwise, do what I do...
Grow your own, dry/freeze 'em and use 'em when ya need 'em.
Want hints/ideas... just ask.
A good one to start w/is how to infuse dried herbs in oils... and here's a nice holiday gift for someone!!!

Those tiny little bottles at the grocery store are highway robbery. We buy all our spices at a local health food store.

Ok well I know i had only been buying what i needed and then i go to the dollar store and hoping they had it. Then a couple of weeks ago there was a $1 coupon off any tone's spices.. and most stores have the little containers of tone's spices at about a dollar .. so you can get the tiny little ones for tax money.. Thank goodness I get abunch of inserts and i have used like 8 of them so far.. and have 4 or 5 more left.. just have to go through what i have so far and buy some more that i still need.
Cause I know that grocery store prices period are giving me sticker shock~@!

ughh i wish I could remember.. i can ask on the coupon forum i go to too... but the experation date on them is 10/10.
I know i have bought them at Hy-Vee and Fareway.. I have seen them at the local grocery store too but they run about 1.39 there. Oh and if you have a Fareway they were 2 for $ 1.50 the last time i was there sooo there was some overage.. which they didn't notice on mine cause i bought so much stuff there and about 8 spices. Oh and I live in Iowa so it might be a local store(Fareway)

Jeesh that is an awful price for spices and I don't blame you for leaving them right there in the store I would have. That is more than gasoline goes for.

Spices are insanely expensive. I buy them at the Christmas Tree Shop (which I'm pretty sure is a New England store) and the Dollar Tree.

My mom uses a lot of caraway seeds. TONS. We buy them on-line. Even with shipping, it is cheaper than anywhere else we have found them. (haven't seen them in our dollar store). If you use a lot of one spice, you might want to check out the on-line spice stores and see how they compare.

I was in The Christmas Tree Shop 2 weeks ago but didn't think about looking for spices. ( I rode down to Albany with Fiance for the day . He had to get something for Sears and The Christmas tree Shop is next door)
I usually get my stuff from the dollar store or the 99 cent ones at Kmart.
Will be looking Friday when I'm in the city.Last edited by Holly; 09-08-2008 at 08:06 PM.
